The Assistant Vice President/Executive Director of Alumni Relations and Constituent Relations is responsible for the planning and implementation of programs and projects that strategically engage Shenandoah University alumni and other constituencies in an effort to add value to the Shenandoah University experience.

The position is charged with securing commitments from alumni and other constituents to provide professional expertise and volunteer service; collaborating with colleagues in the university’s administrative offices (including, but not limited to Admissions, Advancement, Marketing/Communications, and Student Affairs) and the university’s schools and programs to create and maintain pathways for alumni and other constituent participation that advance the goals of the University; partnering with advancement colleagues to identify, cultivate, solicit and steward alumni giving; and serving as a liaison between the Alumni Association Board of Directors, other advisory councils as assigned and academic and administrative leadership.

The Assistant Vice President/Executive Director of Alumni and Constituent Relations reports to the Senior Vice President/Vice President for Advancement and is a senior member of the Advancement team.

The Shenandoah University alumni community currently numbers approximately 24,000 with fifty (50) percent of its alumni having graduated since 2000.

The University will celebrate its Sesquicentennial in 2025 and this position will be an integral part of that celebration.

Required Skills

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
  • Plan, implement and promote alumni and other constituent engagement that support the university’s strategic plan in all ways that enhance the Shenandoah University experience.
  • Establish and build relationships with the diverse constituencies that make up the Shenandoah University alumni body locally, regionally, nationally and internationally; maintain regular communication with alumni and other constituencies via direct contact, email blasts, alumni web pages, and print publications and other social media
  • Work with the director of research & prospect management to ensure accurate and complete alumni database records; capture contact, biographical and career information of alumni and parents via surveys, projects, correspondence, website, postal returns, etc.
  • Work closely with the Alumni Association Board of Directors to arrange meetings, assist its committees and ensuring strong and productive relationships between its members and the academic and administrative leadership
  • Encourage life-long learning beyond the formal degree
  • Partner with assistant vice president of recruitment & admissions for meaningful volunteer involvement in the admissions process; partner with the director of career & professional development to plan the growth and accessibility of career networking services for students and alumni
  • Collaborate closely with the office of development to increasing support from alumni and other constituents; help identify and qualify prospects for gifts; communicate development-related activities via written contact reports filed in Blackbaud and periodic attendance at prospect management meetings
  • Oversee the budgets for alumni and constituent relations programs
  • At present supervises three staff positions, work/study employees (p/t) and provide guidance to various volunteers
OTHER SKILLS:
  • A minimum of five years of experience with demonstrated accomplishment in fostering productive relationships with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, together with the ability to work collaboratively and courteously with colleagues throughout the university, alumni, other constituents and the public
  • The demonstrated ability to strategize, implement and build constituency programs and activities, along with a talent for motivating volunteers
  • Demonstrably strong writing, planning and organizational skills
  • Flexibility and initiative, as well as the ability to work independently, combined with the skills for thriving in a team environment to achieve institutional goals
  • High professional and ethical standards for handling confidential information
  • Ability to organize and complete multiple tasks simultaneously with close attention to detail and prioritization to meet deadlines
  • Ability to travel and work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Bachelor’s degree with master’s degree preferred
