Position Summary

The Systems Administrator performs various complex duties supporting the technology infrastructure of Washburn University and the Washburn Institute of Technology. This position will work in a multiplatform, multisite environment with Windows, Unix, Linux, and Macintosh clients and servers.

Essential Job Functions of Position

As part of the Systems and Network Services group, the Systems Administrator values the importance of delivering high-quality, innovative service to internal and external customers; understands the needs of the customer; responds promptly to customers and is accessible to them. In addition, follows through on customer commitments promptly; maintains positive, long-term working relationships with customers; assumes ownership of process issues and takes appropriate steps to mitigate problems, and the position shares responsibility for the following job functions:

Will apply advanced systems/infrastructure concepts to define, design and implement highly complex Windows, Linux and Cloud-based server solutions.

Create and maintain documentation on all hardware, systems, and software for which the employee is responsible, using designated documentation facilities. Track assignment and project status using Washburn’s ITSM system and other designated means. Responsible for providing internal ITS staff documentation, training, and support as necessary. Advise ITS staff and University clients on system architecture, selection, updates, and improvements.

Monitor and tune systems to achieve optimum performance levels in addition to managing data storage. Develop and maintain documentation of database and operating system hardware/software configuration in an established database application.

Initiate, plan, design and implement hardware-based and virtual systems solutions to maintain, improve, or evolve IT services, adding value by improving utility and reducing costs.

Executes complex security control activities to prevent hackers from infiltrating campus information.

Maintains complex security systems for servers and virtual machines.

Interacts with senior internal and external personnel. May lead a team of systems/infrastructure professionals.

Review, validate, and implement configuration changes to systems requested by customers. Analyze customer requirements to provide design and implementation guidance.

Propose and implement highly complex system enhancements (software and hardware updates) to improve the system’s performance, reliability, and security.

Manage centralized computer servers and make recommendations for purchase or upgrade of new computer hardware and virtual machine components.

Perform highly complex analysis to acquire, install, modify and support operating systems, virtual machine software, and cloud-related solutions.

Conduct highly complex systems support activities. For example, investigate and resolve problems and outages reported by monitoring systems or other means (such as customer or user tickets).

Participate in an on-call rotation to resolve incidents and problems.

Author, test, and maintain programs and highly complex scripts to automate standard processes and workflows to improve the reliability and performance of systems and the efficiency and scalability of the team to manage large numbers of complex systems.

Reviews professional literature to stay abreast of relevant industry developments, technical best practices and relevant state-of-the-art technology, equipment, and systems. Attend classes, seminars, or conferences as approved or directed by the supervisor.

Participate in a 24×7 on-call rotation as assigned to support critical services or respond to emergencies.

Perform additional job-related duties as assigned.

Non-Essential Job Functions of Position

Education and Experience

At least an associate degree in CIS or CS and two years of relevant experience or a combination of information technology education and related experience equivalent to four years.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Must be able to communicate technical information in a clear and concise manner with a diverse constituency. Experience providing ITS help desk support or troubleshooting, skilled in troubleshooting, diagnosing, analyzing and identifying system malfunctions to determine the source and fix the cause of the problem.

Knowledge of core cloud infrastructure fundamentals., including on-prem software such as VMWare, as well as public cloud providers.

Ability to design, set-up, operate, and correct malfunctions involving the application of technology systems.

Knowledge of and experience with virtualized environments, specifically VMWare.
Experience designing for or operating in a public cloud (especially AWS ).

Skilled in programming using PowerCLI, Python or YAML, and in architecting, implementing, upgrading, and maintaining configuration management and monitoring infrastructure.
