Position Summary

Reporting to the Curator for African American Collections, the Collection Development Archivist for African American Collections works to facilitate African American collections coming into the Rose Library and move them expertly into the library’s processes. This position also provides support in outreach instruction for the Rose Library’s African American, and related, collections. This position also takes a leadership role in the creation and implementation of digital projects, and the drafting of grants pertaining to African American collections.

Essential Responsibilities & Duties

Collection Development

  1. Assists with donor stewardship activities, communications, and initiatives in collaboration with the Curator of African American Collections.
  2. Inventories, packs, and sometimes transports collection materials in close collaboration with Collection Services staff.
  3. Contributes to, and at times takes the lead on, digitization and digital humanities projects pertaining to African American Collections.
  4. In collaboration with Collections Services, contributes to, and at times takes the lead on pursuing external funding to enhance access to African American collections, including processing, digitization, and community engagement efforts.
  5. Coordinates communications with faculty, staff, and other potential partners interested in collaborating with African American Collections.

Outreach, Reference, and Instruction

  1. In collaboration with Outreach Archivist and Campus & Community Relations, plans and implements programs that engage communities with Rose Library collections in close collaboration with Rose Library staff.
  2. Collaborates with Instruction Archivist and team, Emory librarians, and Emory faculty to plan, implement, and assess instruction sessions.
  3. Writes articles and blog posts.
  4. Works with the African American Studies and U.S. History Librarian, and Subject Librarians, to integrate Rose collections in teaching and learning at Emory University. Collaborates with curators and exhibit staff to develop physical and digital exhibitions using Rose Library materials.
  5. In collaboration with Research Services, provides reference assistance to Emory students and faculty, visiting scholars, and the public.
  6. Participates in the Rose Library reference and reading room rotations, including 4-6 hours of weekly reference desk shifts.

 Professional Responsibilities

  • Participates in appropriate professional and scholarly associations and organizations including maintaining membership and/or accreditation; attending meetings, conferences, workshops; and serving in appointed or elected positions.
  • Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in areas related to primary job assignment as well as maintains general knowledge of current trends in higher education, academic libraries, and information and educational technology.
  • Provides reference assistance to Emory students and faculty, visiting scholars, and the public as needed and assigned.
  • Adheres to guidelines outlined in the Handbook Governing the Librarian series for Faculty-Equivalent Librarians to ensure appointment, appointment renewal and promotion-in-rank
  • Participates in library and campus communities as appropriate for service purposes.

Required Qualifications

  • ALA-accredited master’s degree in Library and Information Science OR equivalent education and relevant library experience.
  • Two or more years of professional experience in an academic or research library or other relevant setting.
  • Ability to build and sustain effective interpersonal relationships with library staff, faculty and students, off campus faculty and administrators, campus administrators, etc.
  • Evidence of analytical, organizational, communication, project, and time management skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities, meet deadlines, and complete tasks and projects on time and within budget and in accordance with task/project parameters.
  • Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and software, the Web, and library-relevant information technology applications. Working knowledge of standard computer office applications such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint or other productivity software.
  • Commitment to fostering a diverse educational environment and workplace and an ability to work effectively with a diverse faculty and student population.
  • Capacity to thrive in an ambiguous, future-oriented environment of a major research institution and to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current trends and issues in academic libraries, higher education, and relevant subject disciplines.
  • Evidence of active participation, involvement, and leadership in local, state, regional, national, or international professional or scholarly associations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree (subject master’s or doctoral) in a relevant discipline.
