    Department Summary

    The Associate Vice President, Academic Success and Undergraduate Advising reports to the Deputy Provost and Vice Provost for Academic Programs and serves on the Provost Council and Deans Council. The primary focus of the office is on academic advising and excellence and academic support programs. Office of Undergraduate Advising and Student Academic Success is composed of the following offices: Advising and Academic Services, University Honors Program, Academic Center for Excellence (Tutoring, Supplemental Instruction, Writing Centers, and the PDC Student Success Studio), Student Mentoring Programs, Health Professions Advising Center, College Academic Advising, Pan African College Scholars Program, Early Admittance Program (EAP) and CSUSB Early Start Program (ESP).

    The appointee will be considered for retreat rights to an academic department.

    Job Summary

    The Associate Vice President for Undergraduate Advising and Student Academic Success is responsible for providing leadership in several broadly defined areas including:
  • Overseeing Academic Advising for all undergraduate students.
  • Ensuring that CSUSB provides the full array of placement and proficiency tests for potential students and provides leadership for the Early Start Program, a cross-divisional effort mandated by the Chancellor's Office.
  • Provides administrative oversight for the Academic Affairs allocation of Student Success Initiative funds.
  • Working in collaboration with Enrollment Management and The University Honors Program the Associate Vice President oversees the President's Academic Excellence Scholars (PAES) Program.
  • Serves on the Provost's senior leadership team and provides advice and notice regarding all issues likely to affect the Division of Academic Affairs.
  • The Associate Vice President analyzes CSU Executive Orders and drafts policy statements for the campus for those Executive Orders that affect the AVP's areas of responsibility and works with the Deputy Provost to assure chancellor's office compliance.

Employment Status: Full-time, At-Will, Exempt position included in the Management Personnel Plan.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday from 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Occasional evenings and weekends as needed.

Key Qualifications
  • Ability to lead a team of diverse constituents and individuals to foster collaboration and engagement between the campus and the community.
  • Ability to analyze complex issues, manage multiple priorities, and respond proactively in addressing academic issues.
  • A record of commitment to diversity (i.e., recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, students, and staff; infusion of diversity into programs; promoting a work environment that is inclusive and collegial for all faculty, staff, and students).
  • A record of successful involvement in academic advising.
  • A record of successful involvement in educational equity programs.
  • Experience with budget management.
  • Experience providing supervision of staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with deans, department chairs, faculty, and staff, to motivate others into action.

Education and Experience
  • A terminal degree from a regionally accredited institution.
  • A record of at least seven years in progressively responsible positions in higher education and two years as an academic administrator in higher education (preferably as a program director, assistant dean, and associate dean).
  • Knowledge of issues and trends in academic advising for college students with particular knowledge in serving first-generation students and students of color.
  • Knowledge of issues and trends in student learning, outcomes assessment, retention theory, student success practices, educational policy development, and strategic planning.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Earned Doctorate in related field

Salary:
  • Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,250 - $15,500 per month
  • Classification Salary Range: $6,250 - $18,750 per month
