Job Description

Reporting to the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Student Development, Marketing and Communications will create, design, and implement experiences that support the retention, persistence, graduation, and postgraduate success for the student community of Northern Arizona University. Ensuring the success of Campus Recreation student development programs and initiatives, this position will coordinate a robust and creative marketing and communications portfolio incorporating social media and on campus marketing platforms.

Program Management - 35%

  • Manage and evaluate a comprehensive outdoor recreation program including an equipment rental program, challenge course, and adventure trip and guide training programs.
  • Responsible for supervising two outdoor program coordinators and ensuring outdoor recreation programs adhere to risk management, student travel, and safety protocols.
  • Maintain Campus Recreation co-curricular transcript model by mapping individual student experiences and leadership development in accordance with university student retention and persistence initiatives.
  • Collaborate with other staff and faculty in the development of educational learning opportunities focused on leadership for immediate service on campus and future service beyond graduation.
  • Create opportunities for student leaders to process, reflect and translate their student leadership experience.

Program Development - 30%

  • Create a learning environment while developing a dynamic team of professional, support staff and student staff through leadership, goal setting, empowerment, development, and evaluation, with an emphasis on professional competencies and customer service.
  • Develop and implement a civic engagement program incorporating service-learning initiatives and collaboration with academic units.
  • Identify and build relationships with community and academic partners on campus to develop for credit service learning and outdoor leadership academic courses.
  • Develop, refine, and assess campus recreation student staff development training, student leadership competencies, service-learning initiatives, and co-curricular transcripts.
  • Assess programs and services and utilize assessment data to inform future practices.
  • Guide department specific goal setting to support university, division and department mission and values.
  • Coordinate and manage the standard operating procedures and training manuals which creates accountability for department's best practices.

Departmental Marketing & Communication - 30%

  • Support, supervise and evaluate the marketing student staff and coordinate communications strategies with the student marketing team to maximize student engagement.
  • Designs, communicates, and upholds departmental branding standards that create consistency and recognition across all marketing and digital media platforms.
  • Coordinate department outreach efforts to increase awareness and visibility of the program.
  • Manages department website design and content management in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Produces and maintains an active plan and timeline for all marketing campaigns to include evaluation and assessment of the effectiveness of campaigns.
  • Serves as a liaison between Health Sciences, Student Life, EMSA Analytics, Assessment and Communication teams, Alumni Engagement, and others to support student experience and university mission.

Other - 5%

  • Participate in university wide committee and work groups to contribute to the advancement of the University mission and goals.
  • Participation is encouraged on boards, or professional organizations at the state, region, or national platforms, such as NIRSA, NASPA, etc.
  • Prepared to support national recreation trends as identified by department, with the intent of remaining a leader among peer institutions.
  • Work collaboratively within the department and division to enhance student, member, and guest experiences.
  • Other duties as assigned to support division and departmental vision, objectives, and goals.

Typical Working Conditions

  • Occasional use of sports and mechanical equipment.
  • Occasional outdoor activity and exposure to all weather conditions.
  • May work around or use chemicals. May work around electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Exposure to heights. Frequent use of sport and fixed equipment, tools, and University lift training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management, Exercise Science, Health Education/Promotion, Marketing, Communications or related field.
  • 3-5 years of related experience.
  • 2-4 years of management or supervisory experience.
  • Certified American Red Cross CPR/FA (Instructor preferred).
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Recreation Management, Exercise Science, Health Education/Promotion, Marketing, Communications or related field.
  • Experience working in a Higher Education Environment.
  • Experience managing multiple budgets.
  • Experience with strategic planning; goal setting, learning outcomes and leading assessment initiatives.
  • Experience in hiring, training, scheduling, and evaluating professional and student staff.
  • Experience using event/program management applications, i.e. InnoSoft Fusion, Sub It Up, Adobe Creative Suite, lnDesign, Illustrator, Photo Shop, Hoot Suite, Bright Author, OnGuard/Lenel, etc. Experience developing and leading risk management plans.
  • NIRSA-CRSS certification.
