Job Description

Under the direction and supervision of the Assistant Director of Competitive Sports, this position is responsible for the coordination and management of comprehensive Intramural Sports Programs, facility reservations and Summer Camp Activities. Primary functions of this position include the day-to-day operations of Intramural Sports, policy development, maintenance planning, personnel management, and facility reservations, security and safety.

Program Management - 30%

  • Develop, revise, and implement program policies and procedures, assessments, goals and objectives for an intramural sports program that are on the leading edge of national and peer institution trends while maintaining compliance with regulations.
  • Scheduling and management of leagues, tournaments and events including facility reservations, officials scheduling and preparing game management equipment and materials.
  • Develop management strategies to maintain program records, including results, standings, sportsmanship and eligibility records and waivers.
  • Recruit, supervise, train, and evaluate qualified staff including student supervisors and sport officials maintaining certifications and training required by industry standards.
  • Develop and revise staff training, manuals, and in-service trainings to meet industry and university standards.

Program Development - 30%

  • Create and maintain a supportive and culturally rich and diverse environment for staff and participants.
  • Develop and administer a comprehensive risk management program and serve as a program representative on the departments risk management team for Campus Recreation.
  • Actively seek opportunities to maximize student participation by identifying national recreation trends with the intent of remaining a leader among peer institutions.
  • Remain updated with current NIRSA and NFHS rules and review and assist with modifying playing rules for sports.
  • Foster partnerships with outside departments and agencies to enhance program quality and opportunities for staff and participants.

Facility Reservations Coordination - 20%

  • Review, evaluate, process, coordinate and schedule all facility reservation requests for the Recreation Center, South Rec. Fields Complex and other outdoor fields by utilizing the Event Management System (EMS).
  • Process contracts and Facility Use agreements for the department.
  • Coordinate facility use and reservations for FIT 100 classes.
  • Assist with the coordination of the daily operations for the Recreation Center.
  • Coordinate daily operations for Campus Recreation Outdoor Fields.

Risk Management - 15%

  • Prepare and maintain program assessments, roster management, participant eligibility, program data, evaluations, academic success tracking and year-end accomplishments.
  • Collect program financial data, monitor budgets, reconcile finances, entry fees, forfeits, reimbursements and prepare statistical and financial reports.
  • Order inventory; inspect and maintain equipment and supplies.
  • Coordinate and organize program advisory councils- intramural sports and summer activities.

Other - 5%

  • Act as a representative and liaison for Campus Recreation Services and other university departments.
  • Participate as a representative of Campus Recreation at university programs and events, such as; Family Weekend, Homecoming, Orientation, Expos and New Employee Orientations.
  • Provide accurate and timely communications to supervisor and Campus Recreation Leadership.
  • The position may require working mornings, evenings, and weekends.
  • Other duties as assigned to support division and departmental vision, objectives and goals.

Typical Working Conditions

  • Occasional use of sports and mechanical equipment.
  • Occasional outdoor activity and exposure to all weather conditions.
  • May work around or use chemicals. May work around electrical and mechanical hazards.
  • Exposure to heights. Frequent use of sport and fixed equipment, tools, and University lift training.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Sports Management, Recreation, Park & Recreation Management, Health Education/Promotion, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of progressively responsible related experience.
  • 1-2 years of management experience.
  • Current American Red Cross First Aid and Professional Rescuer CPR certifications OR ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Recreation, Park & Recreation Management, Health Education/Promotion or related field.
  • Experience hiring, supervising, training, and evaluating staff and sports officials.
  • Experience developing, supervising, and evaluating summer youth camp style programs Certified Sports Official.
  • American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Instructor trainer.
  • Software platforms (1M Leagues, Fusion, Connect2).
