Position Purpose
In conjunction with Irving Institute leadership the Associate Director for Critical Energy Infrastructures ( CEI ) in a Climate Changing World develops a strategic vision for Institute programming in this area, works to catalyze new research opportunities, and manages programs for faculty, partners, and students. The Associate Director for CEI is primarily responsible for creating world class research programs and programming with faculty and practitioners and will help position Dartmouth as a leader in energy and society research, education, and service.

PhD plus 6 or more years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
- Doctoral degree in field related to energy and society, or the equivalent in education and experience.
- Six years of experience in the energy sector, with an emphasis on research or academic setting.
- Research and fundraising experience required as well as demonstrated success in grant writing and management.
- Strong knowledge in energy and society, including technical, policy, human development or international programs.
- Strong knowledge of current issues and trends in energy and society, including public and private sector stakeholders working in these areas.
- Demonstrated ability to convene and coordinate multiple stakeholders and facilitate collaboration across different organizations.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and to serving the needs of diverse populations.
- Outstanding and versatile writing and editing skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and facility working across differences.
- Ability to independently design, plan, implement, troubleshoot, and administer all phases of a project and to exercise sound judgment.
- Experiential education design and implementation experience desirable.
- Ten years in the energy sector preferred.

Strategic planning
In collaboration with the Irving Institute Director and leadership team, the Associate Director will develop and implement the strategic plan for energy and society programs that: support the development of the “Critical Energy Infrastructures in a Climate Changing World” track; engage with faculty across campus to refine projects and include students from all backgrounds and interests. The Associate Director will work to embed and coordinate Institute efforts with other initiatives, Centers and activities; with the Institute’s Energy Justice and Equity efforts; will be sensitive to the needs of partners, promote equitable relationships and let partner needs drive project development; will effectively allocate and utilize available resources; and will help situate Dartmouth at the forefront of experiential education in energy and society

Fundraising, grant-writing
Working with the Director, the Office of Sponsored Projects, and the Advancement Office, the Associate Director will develop research and philanthropic opportunities for the Irving Institute’s energy and society programs, including grants to federal agencies and charitable foundations and the engagement and cultivation of alumni with the Institute’s global energy and society programs, to ensure topical salience, long-term financial solvency and sustainability of the programs.

Program design, implementation and partnerships
Creates and manages programs that engage faculty, partners and students; provide seed grant support for innovative research opportunities for faculty, staff, undergraduate and graduate students on campus; showcase best practices in energy and society research, education and practice; and reflect ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion. Continually assesses programs for improvement. Coordinates programming with other Irving Institute programs, across campus and with other stakeholder organizations. As a result of the Associate Director’s leadership, faculty, staff and students will have a variety of opportunities with which to engage in Irving Institute energy and society programs such as internships and research, and partners will be integrated into well-coordinated networks on campus, nationally, and internationally.

Drawing on candidate’s own experience and expertise, contributes to energy and society programming, including teaching or co-teaching courses and co-curricular programs, conferences and other activities. May teach one course per year and/or coordinate team taught courses integral to Irving Institute energy and society programming.
