Job Description:

 

The Department of Natural Sciences at Baruch College, City University of New York, invites applications for a full-time Chief College Laboratory Technician starting September 1, 2022. The candidate is expected to be a team leader with duties including but not limited to daily lab setups in biology, supervision of laboratory activities in biology, chemistry and physics, and compliance with federal, state, and city safety regulation.

In addition to the General Duties, the Chief CLT supervises all laboratory operations of the department including:

Oversee all instructional laboratories in the Natural Sciences Department.
Work with the full-time and part-time CLTs to make sure that all laboratory courses in the department are covered with support.
Supervise, coordinate, and train full-time and part-time CLTs in matters regarding the science laboratories and safety.
Purchase, keep records, and distribute laboratory supplies and equipment among the areas of the department following sound budgeting and inventory protocols.
Maintain and update chemical and equipment inventories and facilitate timely waste disposal in collaboration with the laboratory technicians and Campus Facilities.
Routinely maintain and coordinate repair of specialized laboratory equipment and instruments, e.g., lab microscopes, incubators, centrifuges, confocal microscope.
Comply with departmental policy and all relevant local, state, and federal regulations regarding chemical hygiene, hazardous waste disposal, environmental protection, and employee safety and health.
Prepare chemical reagents, setup equipment and displays for biology laboratory exercises and experiments.
Work with faculty and Campus Facilities on purchase of research equipment.
Coordinate delivery and pick-up perishables with the Mailroom and Receiving and Stores, and store as instructed.
Ensure that all CLT work spaces are kept clean and organized.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

High School Diploma with a minimum of twelve years' related experience.  Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience, and a Master's degree in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed may be substituted for an additional one year's experience.  This position requires a high level of technical expertise. 

     

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:

For appointment as a chief college laboratory technician, a person shall have the qualifications and all of the skills of a senior college laboratory technician and, in addition, a minimum of four (4) additional years of appropriate experience related to the job at a level at least equal to that of a senior college laboratory technician. A master’s degree from an accredited institution in an area appropriate to the duties to be performed may substitute for one year of experience. Unique technical expertise clearly above that expected of senior technicians in a department or division shall be required. Longevity and seniority shall not be a basis for appointment or promotion to this title.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
A high degree of experience and familiarity with practical laboratory procedures and maintenance, particularly in the field of biology.
Ability to troubleshoot and repair laboratory equipment.
Experience with confocal microscopy.
Experience in the supervision of others in a professional scientific setting.
Experience in compliance with safety and chemical hygiene regulations.
