Summary

The Assistant Director for Programming and Communication drives partnership and outreach to graduate programs and faculty, and current or potential graduate students through programmatic, editorial, and community engagement to meet the mission of the Graduate School and support GVSU’s strategic goals.

PRIMARY DUTIES

  1. Conduct market research in support of GVSU’s ability to offer new graduate programming.
  2. Expand graduate faculty and graduate student engagement in curricular and co-curricular activities through a multi-channel strategy, identifying new opportunities for promoting engagement; and implementing the design and production of assigned projects.
  3. Provide creative and strategic direction and project/content management for all office communications, including social media, websites, newsletters, audio-visual content, event promotion, and department publications.
  4. Plan and facilitate special events and functions, including the preparation of materials and event logistics for New Graduate Student Orientations, the Graduate School Celebrations, the Graduate Showcase event, and the 3-minute Thesis Competition.
  5. Design and facilitate the project, thesis, and dissertation workshops and other co-curricular activities (track enrollees, workshop logistics, event promotion, handouts/materials – flow charts, etc.); review all final thesis and dissertation documents for compliance with university policies, continuous enrollment requirements, and coordinate the approval and dissemination of all final documents.
  6. Administrate the Michigan Intercollegiate Graduate Studies (MIGS) Program, review applications from non-degree seeking graduate students, prepare and review petitions for exceptions to university graduate education policies and leave of absence requests, and process professional learning credit requests.
  7. Remain current with emerging digital media practices, as well as data collection and analysis.
  8. Supervise undergraduate and graduate student workers in data collection, writing, editing, multimedia content, and related areas.
  9. Performs other duties as required/assigned by associate vice-provost.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  • Master’s degree required. A background in Marketing, Communication, Journalism, Education, or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years of experience managing social and digital media with proven experience in planning, delivering, and measuring event outcomes campaigns.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in digital engagement and communication and data collection and management.
  • Experience creating dynamic content for engaging various educational communities.
  • Experience using a range of social media management tools, as well as social media metrics.
  • Excellent oral, written and editing skills that demonstrate an eye for detail and a passion, charisma, leadership and poise for faculty, students, and staff at GVSU.
  • A strong intellectual curiosity with a commitment to innovation and solution generation.
  • Periodic availability outside of normal business hours.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Normal office environment.  Some travel may be required.
