Job Summary:
The Fairleigh Dickinson University Department of Literature, Languages, Writing, and Humanities, located on the Florham Campus in Madison NJ, is looking for part-time (adjunct) faculty to teach in-person sections of first-year Spanish language courses starting on Jan. 24 for the Spring 2022 semester (see https://www.fdu.edu/academics/academic-calendar/ , and https://www.fdu.edu/coronavirus-update/ for vaccination, masking, and other requirements to be on campus). Sections are either 3 credit hours on a Monday-Thursday or Tuesday-Friday schedule, or 1 credit hour “practica” on Wednesdays. You can teach one section or several. We’re especially eager for people who can teach before 3pm. If you are successful in the position, teaching should be available every semester going forward.
Students taking Spanish at FDU cover a typically broad spectrum of interests and motivations, with career plans that include business, criminology, education, health sciences, hospitality and tourism, law, politics, public service, and more. Some are heritage speakers or have studied Spanish in high school; others are complete beginners. Some are already convinced of the beauty and usefulness of Spanish; others are satisfying a Gen Ed requirement and could use convincing. We hope you can make a first- or second-semester course not only rigorous but also engaging, relevant, and fun for all our students!
Required Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have a PhD in Spanish or a relevant field (Master’s acceptable), and evidence of excellence teaching college Spanish. Any non-academic professional experience using Spanish is also a plus.
Questions? Email Matthieu Boyd (mwboyd@fdu.edu), chair of Literature, Languages, Writing, and Humanities. Review of applications will begin immediately: we expect to hire by the second week of January at the very latest.
Minimum requirements
Advanced degree (PhD preferred, Master’s acceptable) in Spanish or a relevant field.
Experience and evidence of effectiveness in teaching Spanish at the college level.
Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check and produce a Social Security Card.
