About the Doha Institute:

The Doha Institute for Graduate Studies (DI), founded in 2015, is an independent institution of higher education based in Doha, Qatar. The Institute offers internationally accredited postgraduate MA programs of study in two schools: the School of Social Sciences and Humanities and the School of Public Administration and Development Economics. The Institute adopts an interdisciplinary approach, with Arabic Language as its primary language for study and research, and fluency in English a requirement. It has also launched a PhD program in November 2021. DI works to graduate researchers and practitioners who can advance knowledge and better the human condition, while upholding the highest scientific and ethical standards; as well as professionals with leadership skills, integrity and professional competence to satisfy the region’s needs in sustainable development and intellectual, social and professional advancement. 

Brief Description of Program

The Sociology and Anthropology Program aims to provide graduate level students with theoretical, research, and methodological training in the fields of sociology and anthropology covering multiple critical schools of thought and their developments in these fields. The Program focuses on the relationships between local Arab and global contexts, providing students with the opportunity to engage with each level separately and comparatively. This training allows students to produce knowledge about contemporary Arab social issues and the world within a global context.

Job Description

The Sociology and Anthropology Program invites applications for a position in Anthropology at the Assistant or Associate rank. The successful candidate must have completed a PhD in Social or Cultural Anthropology or is scheduled to complete it before September 01, 2022. He/ She is expected to significantly contribute to teaching of core courses in Anthropology and supervise graduate students. A proven teaching and research experience in the Anthropology of the Arab world, particularly North Africa or the Arab Gulf, is required.

The DI recognizes the importance of English for research and teaching. However, the ability to teach in the Arabic language is a prerequisite.

The post will begin at the beginning of the academic year 2022-23. The search will continue until a successful candidate is selected for the post.

Main Responsibilities

The main duties of selected candidate will be:

  • Conducting and publishing high quality research.
  • Supervising student and providing quality academic advising.
  • Teaching Program and School courses.
  • Undertaking administrative and service duties in the Program and School, and at DI.
  • Contributing to developing the Program.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Ability to teach at the postgraduate level
  • Ability to supervise students at the graduate level
  • Experience in carrying out administrative duties within an academic context
  • Ability to teach in Arabic

Education and Degrees Attained

Ph.D. degree in Social or Cultural Anthropology

Required Skills

Skills and Research:

  • The ability to study contemporary anthropological issues using cutting edge theories and methodologies
  • An in-depth knowledge of the latest methodological and theoretical developments in the Arab and International anthropological academic fields
  • An extensive experience in conducting field (empirical) research
  • An emerging/growing portfolio of research publications commensurate with career stage
  • Ability to establish an international reputation in specialist areas of research
  • Ability to attract external funding
  • Experience of or evidence of potential for knowledge transfer, outreach and research impact activities


  • Ability to teach at postgraduate level in Arabic
  • A commitment to high quality teaching and fostering a positive learning environment for students
  • Excellent written, oral communication and presentation skills
  • A proven experience in supervising MA or/and PhD students
  • Team spirit and willingness to collaborate in interdisciplinary teams and projects
  • Evidence of innovation or creativity in teaching
  • Experience in teaching contemporary topics in anthropology at the graduate level, especially the anthropology of North Africa or the Arab Gulf.

Administrative Skills:

  • Willingness to serve on committees at the program, school and institution levels.
  • Able to plan and organize own activity so as to meet objectives and deadlines.
  • Flexible and able to respond to the demands of the job
