Assistant Professor of Practice in Music Technology, Non-Tenure Track

The University of Southern California Thornton School of Music invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor of Practice in Music Technology, non-tenure track. The appointment begins August 15, 2022. This is a non-tenure track (RTPC) position with an initial period of appointment of three years; the appointment is renewable beyond the initial period.

The Music Technology department offers a Bachelor of Music in Music Production and undergraduate and graduate minor fields in audio recording and music production. The department also offers a wide range of recording, desktop music, and studio production courses to Thornton majors and non-majors. The department promotes artistic, technical, and leadership growth and development by mentoring and challenging students in their study, performance, and music production in a wide variety of contemporary musical styles.

The ideal candidate for this position will have significant professional experience in audio engineering for music, including tracking, editing, mixing, and mastering as applied to a broad range of musical styles such as pop/rock, dance, urban, jazz, and classical. Additional expertise in live sound; audio for games, tv or film; and audio systems design and object-based audio mixing is highly desirable. Successful applicants are also expected to have a record of accomplishment working in a highly diverse environment and promoting social justice, equity, and inclusion in their work and approach to the profession.

Required qualifications: demonstrated professional success as an audio engineer; exceptional skill level with music software (Pro Tools), audio consoles, control surfaces, and signal processors; substantial experience mentoring students or interns who aspire to enter the audio production profession.

Preferred qualifications: a master's degree in a related music or audio field and a minimum of three years teaching at the college or university level in the areas of recording arts and music production.

Principal duties will include teaching courses at a variety of experience levels in recording arts, including 1) studio and remote recording; 2) computer-based recording, editing, and mixing; 3) signal processing and mastering; 4) live sound fundamentals, FOH and monitor mixing; 5) digital audio theory and audio systems design; 6) mentor final projects.
