Department / Job Summary:

The Division of Deaf Studies and Professional Studies seeks qualified applicants for an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Educator (DHHE) Master's degree program. This position will manage the continued development and implementation of the DHHE program, which is a fully online graduate program leading to initial teacher licensure in Oregon. The DHHE program has a comprehensive approach to preparing teachers to meet the needs of deaf and hard of hearing children.

 

The Assistant Professor of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Education position is a full time, tenure track appointment with the possibility of summer employment. Instructional delivery will occur during the academic year (fall, winter, and spring terms) and summer term, and may include both online and traditional instructional methods. This position is expected to provide leadership for the DHHE program through Western Oregon University (WOU), The Division of Deaf Studies and Professional Studies (DSPS), and the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC); develop syllabi; develop program-level assessments; create observation protocols; recruiting, screening, and accepting students; recruiting adjunct faculty; teaching courses; coordinating the DHHE program; coordinating, compiling, and reporting data to meet accreditation needs; and advising students. The successful candidate will teach in an online mode and will use web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction using the university LMS. Outcome assessment and service learning are important components of the university curriculum.  Holding this faculty position remotely may be negotiated

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree or terminal degree in Deaf Education, Special Education, or related field from an accredited institution; ABD candidates will be considered, doctoral degree expected by start date.
  • Teacher Licensure; Evidence of three years of licensed, successful K-12 teaching experience with children who are deaf and hard of hearing; OR
  • Administrative experience in working in academic settings with teachers
  • Knowledge of linguistic principles of American Sign Language (ASL) and native-like fluency in ASL and English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of ability to effectively provide program coordination and leadership
  • Experience in college/university teaching and student supervision
  • Online teaching experience
  • Knowledge of accreditation requirements relevant to teacher preparation
  • Demonstrated dedication to multicultural education and social justice (e.g., LGBTQ+, ethnic groups, social class, and disability status)
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Evidence of a commitment to working collegially

 

Start Date: September 16, 2022 or earlier if mutually agreeable
