invites qualified applicants to join our team as an Instructor or Assistant/Associate Professor of Computer Science. BSU’s vision is to educate people to lead inspired lives. BSU is located amid the lakes and forests of northern Minnesota and occupies a wooded campus along the shore of Lake Bemidji. BSU balances rigorous academia with the opportunity to enjoy a fun, robust, outdoor culture. The proximity to the lake and the surrounding north woods allows easy access to an assortment of recreation. Major campus facilities are connected by all-season underground passages for safe and warm travel during the cold, winter months.

Enrolling around 5,000 students, BSU offers more than 70 undergraduate majors and nine graduate degrees encompassing arts, sciences and select professional programs. BSU is a member of the Minnesota State system of colleges and universities and has a faculty and staff of more than 550. BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values include civic engagement and leadership, international and multicultural understanding, belief in the power of the liberal arts, and environmental stewardship.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at BSU currently houses undergraduate and graduate programs. These include a BS in Computer Science. We also offer a variety of degrees in Mathematics. The Department offers effective programs of study providing students with a core of knowledge in computer science. The department is fully committed to equity and to diversity in our faculty and students and has started a departmental program that helps faculty advance their own understanding of how they can provide more inclusive mathematics and computer science teaching.

Responsibilities of the Instructor or Assistant/Associate Professor of Computer Science include:

  • Teaching Computer Science courses at the undergraduate level, including introductory courses for computer science majors, a variety of advanced courses for computer science majors including at least two of the following: theory of computation, software engineering, assembly language programming, compilers, computing ethics, and courses for non-majors. The normal teaching load for a semester is 3-4 courses totaling 12 credit hours.
  • In addition to classroom teaching responsibilities and committee work, contributing to a program of scholarship within the discipline, working with other faculty members on curriculum development, computer science outreach, participating in departmental student-centered activities, and acting as an academic advisor.
  • Participating in Program and University assessment as well as equity and inclusion activities.
  • Contributing to a collegial and supportive environment that advances the goals of the department, including curriculum development, assessment, and other departmental governance activities.
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary teaching and involvement in activities that support BSU’s Shared Fundamental Values.
  • If needed, designing and delivering courses with a Learning Management System, such as D2L.

Minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • MS in Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited institution at the time of employment (8/16/2022).
  • Experience or credentials in teaching a wide range of lower and upper division Computer Science courses including at least two of the following: theory of computation, assembly language, software engineering, computing ethics, and compilers.
  • Experience in working in collaborative and/or interdisciplinary settings.

Preferred qualifications include:

  • PhD in Computer Science or related discipline.
  • Experience in using paired-programming and other collaborative pedagogies.
  • Professional or applied background in computer hardware, computing ethics, or related field.
  • Skills/ability to design and deliver on-campus and online courses.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, interest, or experience working with students and/or colleagues from multicultural and diverse backgrounds.

Bemidji State University is nestled among the pines along the shores of Lake Bemidji, just blocks from a thriving downtown community. The historic Paul Bunyan Playhouse has a calendar of classic shows; restaurants and lounges offer weekly live music performances; the First Friday Art Walk provides a tour of new monthly art exhibits; and annual events such as the Loop the Lake Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Blue Ox Marathon, Bemidji Winterfest, and The Minnesota Finlandia bring the community together.

For those who love the outdoors, there are wooded, multi-use trail systems within minutes of campus and community parks with walking trails, playgrounds and a skate park. Lake Bemidji State Park and its miles of navigable trails is located directly across the lake from BSU, and the Buena Vista Ski Area — just 12 miles north of campus — offers downhill skiing and BSU-sponsored student transportation in the winter months. Further, the Mississippi River Headwaters is a mere 45 minutes from Bemidji.
