Job Description

The Multicultural Academic Opportunities Program (MAOP) is an academic success community founded upon the principles of self-help, mentoring, and peer support. Central to the goal of MAOP is the promotion of diversification in the student body at Virginia Tech on the undergraduate and graduate levels. The MAOP Program provides support and guidance for students who participate in the Undergraduate Scholars Program, the Graduate Scholars Program, the Luis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation at Virginia Tech (LSAMP) and the Clare Boothe Luce Program. MAOP also sponsors a Summer Research Internship (SRI) for undergraduates from across the United States.

The Assistant Director is a 12-month administrative faculty position reporting to the Director.

Duties Include:
• Coordinate workshops on academic success, preparing for and applying to graduate school, and career exploration and preparation for Undergraduate Scholars and LSAMP students.
• Meet with Undergraduate Scholars and LSAMP students in order to develop individual plans for academic success.
• Collaborate with the academic colleges in selecting students for the MAOP undergraduate scholarship.
• Manage the Undergraduate Scholars budget in consultation with the Director
• Assist with managing the LSAMP budget in consultation with the Director
• Develop and implement an assessment plan for the Undergraduate Scholars Program and LSAMP.
• Represent MAOP on various university committees.
• Coordinate campus visits for various student groups and stakeholder (middle/high school and community college).
• Travel, in collaboration with the Director, to recruit students on behalf of MAOP and Virginia Tech’s Graduate School.
• Assist Undergraduate Scholars and LSAMP students in preparing for research conferences, developing career competencies, and enhancing their interview skills.
• Travel, in collaboration with the Director, with students to regional and national research conferences.
• Supervise and evaluate a graduate assistant.
• Additional projects may be assigned based on departmental goals.

Required Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field from an accredited college or university with demonstrated progressive experience
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student development
• Previous experience in academic advising, career advising or student affairs with a diverse student undergraduate and/or graduate population in a college or university setting
• Strong computer skills in electronic file management, word processing, and spreadsheets
• Must be detail oriented, with evidence of strong organizational and problem-solving skills
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, and presentation skills;
• Must be self-motivated as well as flexible and creative in finding solutions for problems;
• Must enjoy working with students and have a professional manner of communication;
• Must be able to work effectively with a diverse population, including students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and prospective students and their families.
• Demonstrated experience in project management and/or program planning.
• Excellent communication skills and values collaboration

• Demonstrated ability in staff supervision and administrative work
• Experience with grant writing and management
• Experience with budget development, allocation and management
• Experience in conducting assessments and reporting findings
