Assistant/Associate Professor or Artist-in-Residence Musical Theatre Directing
Join our community and experience Emerson College!

The Department of Performing Arts at Emerson College seeks an artist-in-residence (full-time, non-tenured renewable faculty line), tenure track assistant or tenured associate professor (pending tenure transfer) of Musical Theatre Directing for the BFA Program in Musical Theatre. The department seeks candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to traditional creative accomplishment/research, teaching, and service. The appointment begins 18, 2022 with a mandatory 2-day orientation August 18 & 19, 2022.

Emerson College is committed to an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity—in people, in the curriculum, in the co-curriculum, and in the College's intellectual, social, cultural, and geographical communities. Emerson endorses a framework of inclusive excellence, which recognizes that institutional excellence comes from fully engaging with diversity in all aspects of institutional activities. Emerson is committed to strengthening communities, including our workplace, by fostering the development of the intercultural competencies necessary for meaningful citizenship in an increasingly complex, pluralistic society.

The Department of Performing Arts is home to one of the nation's leading undergraduate programs in theatrical performance and design, with 97 full- and part-time faculty members and staff and 526 majors across all disciplines. The department offers B.F.A. degrees in Theatre Design/Technology, Stage & Production Management, Musical Theatre, Acting, Theatre, Theatre & Performance, Theatre Education, and Theatre Education & Performance. Emerson Stage presents eight fully staged major productions annually in five theatres, with additional production opportunities available to our students through ArtsEmerson, our nationally and internationally-recognized professional presenting company. Emerson is also home to Howlround Theatre Commons.

Emerson College is the nation's only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Its main campus is located in the center of the dynamic multicultural city of Boston, in the heart of Boston's downtown Theatre District. The college also has campuses in Los Angeles and the Netherlands. Emerson College enrolls over 5,100 graduate and undergraduate students from more than 58 countries and all 50 states.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching musical theatre performance in scene study classes, and teaching solo and audition techniques particularly focused on contemporary styles and new works. Directing musical theatre productions for Emerson Stage—the producing organization for the Department or Performing Arts—is also required. Additional responsibilities include academic advising, mentoring for professional orientation and active recruitment of prospective students nationwide. This position will work closely with the head of the Musical Theatre Program to assist in curriculum and policy development, advocate on behalf of the Department, its faculty and students, and represent the College, Department and program in donor and showcase activities, recruitment efforts, and administrative/service meetings. Basic information on the program is available at: https://www.emerson.edu/programs/musical-theatre-bfa. The expectations for achieving tenure in this position will include staying professionally active in the profession.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have an MFA degree in acting, directing, or a related field or a bachelor's degree and significant professional experience in directing musical theatre productions; college-level teaching experience; knowledge of prominent acting training systems; experience directing musical theatre; a thorough knowledge of musical theatre history and repertoire in both traditional and contemporary works, including knowledge and expertise in a variety of contemporary pop/rock styles; demonstrated commitment to academic rigor; and demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures. Preference will be given to candidates with active and current connections to the industry and professional organizations, particularly in New York City and Los Angeles. A record of successful coaching for national unified auditions is preferred.

Candidates should be able to address issues of race and representation in all of their courses. The department is engaged in identifying and removing barriers to admission for working-class students and students of color. The successful candidate will bring expertise to this dialogue. Our ideal candidate will also possess a keen and developed awareness of the issues around diversity, inclusion, and equity within the classroom, and within the profession. The candidate should have facility with culturally responsive pedagogies and approaches, and possess a fluid overall pedagogy that is able to adapt and expand as the cultural conversation around representation, privilege-based difference, and inclusive excellence continues to evolve.

We encourage applications from candidates who use theatre to expose power relationships and oppressive practices that are normalized in dominant culture and who explore race, gender, sexuality, and class dynamics through their work. Candidates must have demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. An ability to work and teach collaboratively, and a strong commitment to undergraduate education beyond the classroom are essential. Members of underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

To apply please submit the following:
  • Cover letter
  • Curriculum vita
  • Support materials/links to professional work
  • Statement of Teaching Philosophy
  • Diversity and Inclusion Statement that addresses how the candidate works to achieve inclusive excellence and an anti-racist ethos within their classrooms
  • Contact information for three references (not to be contacted without applicants approval)

Please note, in the job application, where there is the "CV/Cover Letter/ Additional Documents" drop box, you must include all of the required materials listed above. You can upload each document separately or as a combined PDF. Your application will not be complete without these documents.

If you are having issues uploading, please email facultycareers@emerson.edu.

Review of applications will begin November 23, 2021. The position remains open until filled.
