Job Details

Amherst College invites applications for a visiting lecturer in Japanese language, beginning July 1, 2022. This is a one-year nonrenewable full-time position. The successful candidate will offer courses in Japanese language at the intermediate and advanced levels and will be responsible for teaching six semester courses or the equivalent over the course of the year. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, successful candidates will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work toward supporting a broadly diverse community. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst's students are Pell grant recipients; 43 percent of our students are domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexuality, and religion.

Candidates must have native or near-native fluency in Japanese and English and will have demonstrated experience and excellence in teaching Japanese language courses. The academic field of specialization may be linguistics, language education, second language acquisition, Japanese language and literature, or another related field. The Ph.D. degree is preferred, and a master's degree is required. Interested candidates should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, three confidential letters of recommendation, and a personal statement outlining their philosophy of language teaching. Candidates are asked to apply electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com/100269&source=gmail&ust=1639499463757000&usg=AOvVaw1usd1jBFr-KdnmP6-5DKHe">http://apply.interfolio.com/100269.
