Chief Objective of Position

Responsible for assisting the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach in overseeing the operations of the strength and conditioning program and providing leadership for student-athletes with this area.

Work Tasks

  1. Oversee the activities of the athletics weight room as assigned. Ensure safe operation and professional supervision of the facility. 
  2. Design and implement proper, efficient, scientifically sound training programs for assigned teams. 
  3. Work with head coaches to plan, organize, and facilitate the strength and conditioning needs for assigned teams on a daily basis. 
  4. Evaluate individual performance and provide leadership and instruction in strength and conditioning improvement for individual student-athletes on assigned teams. 
  5. Assist in the planning and administering of the off season physical training program in conjunction with the head coaches of assigned teams. Work with sport coaches to assess specific needs of the team or on an individual basis. 
  6. Oversee the student work and internship programs. 
  7. Staying current in new trends for strength and conditioning workout tools that would best meet the needs of our student-athletes. 
  8. Assist the Athletic Training and medical staff in rehabilitation and injury prevention as needed. 
  9. Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the intercollegiate athletics program to include adhering to all departmental policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). 
  10. Represents the Christopher Newport University Athletic Department in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events. 
  11. Assists in conducting public relations and marketing activities to promote athletic program; perform community relation activities. 
  12. Conduct workouts in a safe, efficient, organized manner in compliance with NCAA regulations. 
  13. Develops and maintains very positive and professional customer service and relations within the office and with all constituencies to include students, faculty, staff, administrators, other employees, other agency personnel and community members. Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude and treats everyone with dignity and respect. Fully supports the “Student’s First” value at CNU and routinely goes the extra mile in providing service. Completes all work in a timely, efficient and accurate manner. 
  14. Safety issues are reviewed and communicated to assure a safe and healthy workplace and a reduction in work related absence. 
  15. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the CNU Police. The CNU Police will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for faculty and staff designated as a Campus Security Authority. 
  16. This position is designated as a “responsible employee” who has the authority to redress sexual violence, who has the duty to report incidents of sexual violence or other student misconduct, or who a student could reasonably believe has this authority or duty. 
  17. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) required

Knowledge of National Collegiate Athletics Association rules and regulations. Ability to learn and work with Conference rules and regulations. Skill in training or instructing student athletes; excellent interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated organizational and time management skills. Ability to analyze situations and develop solutions; travel and work non-traditional hours; manage people and projects.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities (KSA's) preferred

Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with NCAA Division III rules and regulations.  

Required Education

Master’s Degree in a related field; or a Bachelor’s Degree and significant work experience at a level which equates to an advanced degree.

Preferred Education

CSCS, SCCC and USAW certifications are preferred.

Experience Required

Considerable experience in conducting strength and conditioning programs. 
Working with both male and female athletes as a strength and conditioning coach.

Experience Preferred

Experience in a college/university setting. Experience working in athletics.
