Hillsdale College, a selective and independent liberal arts college of about 1400 students in southern Michigan, is seeking a broadly trained anatomist and physiologist. The successful candidate will teach a two-semester sequence in anatomy and physiology for pre-professional students, liberal arts biology for non-majors, and additional courses in the candidate’s specialty. The successful candidate will also advise upper-level biology majors on their capstone senior thesis projects.
Requirements for this position include a PhD in an appropriate field, a strong ability to teach gross human cadaver dissection, and an interest in teaching undergraduate students of all levels, from freshman non-majors to advanced biology students.
The mission of the biology department is to explain, in the context of the liberal arts, how life relates, adapts, and evolves in an ever-changing environment. The department boasts the highest graduate school placement rate in the college and routinely scores in the top 3–5% of biology programs nationally. All biology majors take upper-level courses in cell/molecular biology, organismal biology, genetics, ecology/evolutionary biology, biostatistics, and a four-semester sequence of specialized research. All lectures and labs are taught by the faculty, and students have hands-on access to advanced equipment. All biology majors spend a semester as a laboratory teaching assistant and undertake a research project starting their junior year. The teaching of organic evolution is conspicuous and central to the curriculum.
Current facilities include a dedicated cadaver lab and advanced iWorx physiology system, as well as qPCR/RT-qPCR genetic sequencing, confocal, widefield fluorescent, and scanning electron microscopy, level 2 biosafety lab, cell culture lab, environmental control chambers, and HPLC and gas chromatographs. Start-up funds will be available for additional equipment.
Starting date for this position is August 2022. For additional information contact the department chair: Dr. David Houghton (dhoughton@hillsdale.edu). Additional resources and position description can be found at the department website. (https://www.hillsdale.edu/majors-minors/biology/). Applicants should familiarize themselves with the College’s Mission Statement (https://www.hillsdale.edu/about/mission/).
Applicants should submit the following materials via Interfolio:
- Letter of application including statements of teaching philosophy and research interests.
- A specific response to the college Mission Statement, addressing interests and abilities to teach in view of its commitments.
- Current curriculum vitae.
- Three letters of recommendation.
- Copy of unofficial transcripts.
Review of applications will begin on 01 February 2022 and will continue until a successful applicant is found.
