The Institute for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) invites applications for full-time tenured or tenure-track faculty positions in Archaeology and Cultural Heritage Studies, Urban Studies, New Media and Visual Culture, and STS (Science, Technology and Society) at ranks of Full/Associate/Assistant Professor, to begin in August, 2022.

The successful candidates of these four areas will contribute to social science curricula that encourage interdisciplinary approach. Quality undergraduate teaching and mentorship, as well as innovative research and service are expected. With the exception of senior candidates with tenure, initial appointment will normally be made on a three-year contract, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Tenure review and promotion normally take place before completion of the second three-year contract.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have a PhD degree from an accredited institution of higher education. Senior candidates are expected to have a high international standing in the fields, with an exceptional track record of high-quality research and scholarly publications. The university teaching languages are English and Chinese. Satisfactory knowledge of Chinese is preferable but not required.

APPLICATION PROCESS: Applications will be accepted starting November 1, 2021. Applicants should send a cover letter and curriculum vitae with at least three names of references by email to fellows@sustech.edu.cn no later than February 15, 2022. Review of applications begins on February 25, 2022 and will continue until the positions are filled.

Meanwhile, the Society of Fellows in the Liberal Arts at SUSTech invites applications for Junior Fellowships in the social sciences and humanities. These postdoctoral fellowships aim at fostering the academic careers of scholars who have recently received their Ph.D. degrees by providing a competitive package and membership in an interdisciplinary scholarly community. The Society will select a cohort of up to ten Junior Fellows for the class of 2022. Those selected will be offered a two-year postdoctoral appointment beginning in August 2022.

Junior Fellows are expected to devote their time to productive scholarship, focusing on publishing their dissertation research, undertaking new research in accordance with their proposed project, and engaging in other original work that will further their academic careers. The Society aims to foster teaching excellence in the humanities and social sciences, and the fellowships carry with them a teaching responsibility of four 2-credit courses over the two-year period, one course per term.

Application Procedures

Applications will be accepted starting November 1st , 2021.

Applicants should provide the following materials:

-a curriculum vitae

-a personal statement (of 1000 - 2000 words) outlining your dissertation or other major research projects, professional goals, and any other information relevant to your candidacy

-a dissertation abstract

-a writing sample (one chapter of the dissertation, or one published article related to your dissertation or most recent research project)

-a research plan (no longer than 1000 words) for the two-year fellowship period at SUSTech

-three letters of recommendation, to be sent directly by the referees to SUSTech via email (fellows@sustech.edu.cn)
