Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies

Minimum Qualifications

  • Conferred Ph.D. at date-of-hire in a relevant field (e.g., environmental studies/science, natural resource management, environmental planning, environmental/conservation social science, geography, anthropology, sociology, wildlife management, among others).
  • Evidence of the ability to work in a strongly interdisciplinary program.
  • Evidence of the ability to develop and conduct an active and focused program of research (areas of interest include, but are not limited to, community-based natural resource management, environmental planning, environmental policy, environmental justice, human dimensions of climate change, and related fields.
  • Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching a highly diverse community of students. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with colleagues in an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community
  • Exhibit intercultural competence with diverse groups in teaching, research and/or service. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated excellence and interest in teaching general education classes as well as courses in their areas of specialty.
  • Demonstrated relevant teaching experience in areas such as environmental impact analysis, environmental policy and planning, environmental design and/or other planning, policy or natural resources-related courses.
  • Demonstrated ability and interest to connect technical skills, such as the development of environmental impact reports, climate plans, general plans, etc., to broader questions about the relationships between race, gender, identity, ethnicity, power, wealth, and natural resources and environmental planning.
  • Demonstrated experience with California-specific environmental policy or planning processes (e.g., CEQA) is desired.
  • Demonstrated interest and ability to contribute to diversity and inclusion of underrepresented groups through education, applied research, or service.
  • Professional planning experience and/or coalition building with professional planners is a plus.
