Dean of Libraries

North Dakota State University (NDSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of
NDSU Libraries. The University seeks an individual who will provide vision and leadership to the Libraries.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Dean of Libraries will be a collaborative and innovative leader who understands the role of academic libraries in a research university and has a vision for the library’s role in the growth of NDSU as a student focused, land-grant, research institution.  The Dean will have a proactive commitment to all students, faculty and staff involved in teaching, research and extension.
The Dean will implement a vision for the Libraries consistent with NDSU’s recently developed strategic plan. The Dean will provide management of the NDSU Libraries, including personnel administration, oversight of programs and services and preparation and execution of the budget.  In addition, the Dean will lead efforts to increase federal, state and private support for the Libraries, and to advocate for the Libraries regionally and nationally. The Dean will report directly to the Provost.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• MLS/MLIS degree (or equivalent) from an ALA-accredited program or five years of administrative experience at a research university
• Demonstrated record of leadership experience that includes promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion
• Proven experience with effective personnel management
• Proven record of successful budget management
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with emphasis on effective listening
• Ability to interact at all levels in an academic setting, be a university leader and advocate effectively for the NDSU Libraries with a variety of on- and off-campus constituencies

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Professional experience in a college or university library
• Knowledge of academic library budget issues
• Demonstrated commitment to transparent, ethical and collaborative decision-making including management of competing priorities
• Understanding of library information systems and current and emerging innovations in academic libraries
• Experience supporting and advocating for archives and special collections
• Evidence of being a relationship-builder, fundraiser and steward in working with benefactors, alumni and friends to generate private resources
• Evidence of scholarly research and publications and/or other professional achievement

THE NDSU LIBRARIES
NDSU Libraries serve a vibrant learning community and strengthen NDSU’s academically rigorous programs by providing a variety of locations, resources and services throughout campus including the Main Library, Business Learning Center, Germans from Russia Heritage Collection, Klai Juba Wald Architectural Studies Library, NDSU Archives, and the NDSU Nursing at Sanford Health Library in Bismarck.
NDSU Libraries serve a student population around 12,500 as they enrich teaching, learning and research to advance innovation and academic excellence. Librarians and staff collaborate with faculty to enhance engagement with scholarship and incorporate literacy concepts into the curriculum. The Libraries also have high-tech labs and services to create new knowledge and intellectual property while advancing opportunities for students.
NDSU Libraries provide expansive resources and staff support for students and faculty to be directly involved in world-class research. Dynamic collections and resources have been developed over several decades to enhance critical thinking as students engage with information. NDSU Libraries offer approximately 800,000 physical items (books, journals and periodicals, maps, government documents, audio-visual materials and microforms), more than 200 databases and over 400,000 e-books and e-journals.  The Libraries have developed consortial partnerships with Online Dakota Information Network (ODIN), Minitex, OCLC, and Lyrasis and acts as a shared regional Federal Depository Library with the University of North Dakota. NDSU is part of the Tri-College University, which allows the Libraries to expand their collection offerings through reciprocal borrowing privileges for all students, faculty and staff of Tri-College University members and through priority interlibrary loan services.
