California State University San Marcos
Search for the Dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
San Marcos, California

California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) seeks nominations and applications for the next Dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (CSTEM).

CSTEM was established in 2010 as a forward-thinking community of scholars and researchers pushing the boundaries of human knowledge and discovery in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The College plays a vital role the economic development and progress of the region and in enabling the University to achieve its mission of delivering exceptional education and scholarship, ensuring success for all students, and providing a high-quality, relevant, and compelling education. CSTEM offers seven bachelor of science degrees, four master of science degrees, and contributes richly to the University’s general education program.

Since its founding in 1989 as the California State University’s 20th campus, CSUSM has grown to serve over 17,000 students across its 43 undergraduate and 24 graduate programs. A comprehensive public university offering diverse academic programs, the campus prides itself on exemplary teaching, innovative and experiential curricula, and the application of new technologies to solve real problems. A national model for student access and success, over 60 percent of CSUSM students come from an underrepresented background and more than 50 percent of graduates are the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree. CSUSM is designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) and the student body is extraordinarily diverse and proudly reflective of its surrounding community. Additionally, the University enrolls more Native American students per capita than any other California State University (CSU) campus. According to the University’s mission statement, “CSUSM grounds its mission in the public trust, alignment with regional needs, and sustained enrichment of the intellectual, civic, economic, and cultural life of the region and state.”

The Dean will join CSUSM at a transformative time. The campus will soon finalize a new strategic plan, charting a course for the next five years of growth, innovation, and impact for CSUSM’s remarkably diverse student body. CSUSM seeks an exceptional and collaborative academic leader who will bring a passion for CSUSM’s student-centered vision and commitment to community engagement and help CSTEM realize that mission through innovative, impactful programs. The Dean will also be driven by a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will champion the University’s mission of student success.

The ideal candidate will be a leader committed to the advancement of STEM education and research in the spirit of the University’s mission of excellence and access. In addition, successful candidates must have a proven record of advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and show strong evidence of visionary leadership, innovative thinking, administrative and fundraising acumen, and the ability to foster an environment of growth and intellectual development for students, faculty, and staff. The next Dean will also bring a distinguished scholarly and teaching record appropriate for appointment as a Professor at CSUSM.
