Scope of Job:
We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as a Lecturer I/Technician of Ceramics beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. We see an energetic educator, artist, and technician who will work diligently to create a dynamic ceramics program at the School of Art and Design. The candidate will actively contribute to our Art program, especially ceramics and 3D. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching in both campuses (Brownsville and Edinburg), art program/curriculum development, and a willingness to promote the UTRGV ceramics program.
The successful candidate will have a willingness to play an active role in the management of the area, in collaboration with other area faculty. The successful candidate will have the breadth and knowledge to teach art foundation courses, ceramics at all levels, and other 3D courses. In addition to their area of specialty, the candidate will also be conversant in the historical and contemporary movements within the field of ceramics. The successful candidate may work closely with community-based arts education organizations and constituents in area public schools, and will have the opportunity to develop new offerings at the undergraduate and graduate levels
The ability to work collegially and productively with others is an essential aspect of the position. The successful candidate will be given a 3/3 teaching load and a large part of this position will involve the technical repair and maintenance of equipment, inventory, troubleshooting, and assisting students in the proper use of all equipment. Extensive knowledge and experience working with kilns, clay/glaze materials, and ceramic studio equipment is required.

UTRGV School of Art and Design
The UTRGV School of Art is a bi-campus school which maintains facilities in both Edinburg and Brownsville. In Edinburg is a 73,000-square foot facility with the highest quality studios and labs in graphic design, sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, printmaking, digital photography and film photography with a wet lab. In Brownsville is a 20,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space with very unique 20-foot-high ceilings in all of their studios for optimum student art production in painting, ceramics, sculpture photography (digital and film), printmaking, drawing, an iMac lab for computer imaging and graphics, and a 3000-square foot outdoor open area for experimental art.

Minimum Qualifications:
MFA in Ceramics from an accredited institution.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications:
- Master of Fine Arts degree with demonstrated professional achievement in the field of ceramics conferred by the time of appointment
- Teach three courses per semester
- Possess experience of teaching ceramics and other related courses beyond the T.A. level
- Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary art theory relevant to ceramics and contemporary studio practice
- Shared oversight and operation of the Ceramics area including but not limited to overseeing a safe working environment, curriculum development, departmental reviews, executing a budget, managing supplies and equipment, and supervising graduate assistants and work-study students
- Demonstrated desire to mentor students
- Demonstrated ability to foster an active and engaging learning environment
- Participation in graduate and undergraduate student mentoring and advising, including active participation in B.F.A. and M.F.A reviews as well M.F.A. thesis committees
- Program representation and recruitment
- Committee and other service at the school, department, college, and/or university level


Preferred Qualification:
- Experience working with a potter’s wheel.

Additional Information:
UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

demonstrate proficiency in English as determined by a satisfactory paper-based
test score of 500 (computer-based of 173 or internet-based of 61) on the Test of
