The Opportunity: 

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Colorado School of Mines (Mines) invites applications for a non-tenure-track Teaching Faculty. The Department is looking to hire Teaching Faculty who have a clear passion for conveying knowledge to our students.  We are looking for superb educators who inspire students and will advance the University’s commitment to diversity. We seek candidates who can teach across our curriculum, though experience in Aerospace or with Aerospace, Propulsion, Systems Engineering and/or CFD teaching experience is desired.  We are specifically seeking candidates that are comfortable with project-based and active learning in the classroom and would be willing to contribute to developing online courses for both our undergraduate and graduate programs.  Candidates should also plan to support departmental committees, coordinate multi-section courses (including supervision and training of teaching assistants), and participate in curriculum innovations and improvements. 


We are specifically seeking candidates that are comfortable with project-based and active learning in the classroom and would be willing to contribute to developing online courses for both our undergraduate and graduate programs.  Candidates will also:

  • Serve on departmental committees 
  • Coordinate multi-section courses (including supervision and training of teaching assistants) 
  • Participate in curriculum innovations and improvements

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Possess a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or another closely related field and with relevant teaching and/or industry experience. 
  • Demonstrated qualifications and experience for teaching in the designated courses/areas
  • Teaching Assistant/Associate Professor: Demonstrated record of teaching excellence and evidence of educational service or relative industry experience.
  • Teaching Professor: Demonstrated record of leadership and application of educational research.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience teaching in the designated courses/areas or significant industry experience 
  • Experience in project-based or active classrooms

Colorado School of Mines is located in picturesque Golden, in the foothills of the Rockies, 15 miles west of Denver and 20 miles south of Boulder. The Department of Mechanical Engineering is focused on education and both basic and applied research that addresses problems of national interest in the areas of thermal-fluid systems, systems/operations engineering, advanced manufacturing, biomechanics, robotics automation, and solid mechanics and materials. Our undergraduate enrollment in Mechanical Engineering is 1,373, with approximately 22.5% women and 18% underrepresented students. We pride ourselves with a strong project-based spine of undergraduate courses that apply theoretical knowledge and engineering skills in classroom activities and team projects.  We maintain a high-quality, well-funded research program (~$12M in annual research awards) with strong participation from students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Pay Range: 

Mines is offering an academic year salary of:
Assistant Professor $76,000 - $84,000
Associate Professor $87,000 - 93,000
Professor $94,000 - $100,000

Mines takes into consideration a combination of candidate’s education, training and experience as well as the position’s scope and complexity, the discretion and latitude required in the role, work location, and external market and internal value when determining a salary level for potential new employees.
