POSITION DETAILS

Founded in 1971 in Long Island City, Queens, LaGuardia Community College is one of seven community colleges of the City University of New York/CUNY.  In 2019, LaGuardia served over 30,000 students in pre-college, associate degree, and continuing education programs.  Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts.  Consistent with the diversity of Queens, 56 percent of LaGuardia students are born outside of the United States.  More than half are first-generation college students.  Sixty-nine percent live in Queens; the rest come from Brooklyn and beyond.  Virtually all LaGuardia students are ethnic minorities (88 percent), 58 percent are women, and 31 percent are over the age of 25.  Forty-eight percent of LaGuardia students are Hispanic, making the college a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI).  Sixty-six percent of LaGuardia students receive financial aid.  Slightly less than half attend part-time, often because they need to work to support their families.  LaGuardia ranked fifth among U.S. community colleges in economic mobility – moving low-income students into the middle class and beyond – in a 2017 Stanford University study.  For more information about LaGuardia please visit www.laguardia.edu.

Reporting to the Director, the International Student Specialist provides immigration, cross-cultural, and academic counseling to foreign students, organize outreach efforts to targeted international student groups, plan orientation sessions for new and continuing international students, manage and update all ISS databases, and compile comparative statistical reports from campus and internal International Student Services (ISS) databases at the request of the Director. The International Student Specialist will also be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

• Complete immigration procedures and documents on behalf of the college and the student body;
• Evaluate 1-20 applications, approve student financial documents, semester-based student academic progress checks for early alert purposes;
• Act as a liaison for foreign student matters;
• Work in collaboration with ISS director to make ISS procedures and services known to the campus community by identifying all campus offices that come in contact with international students, insuring that each department is aware of ISS services and international student needs by composing relevant literature and holding informational sessions;
• Plan, organize and execute orientations, workshops and outreach programs for new and continuing international students;
• Compose informational letters, plan and outreach efforts designed to increase retention of continuing students;
• Assist with the management of all ISS databases;
• Ensure that international students are properly coded in CUNYfirst;
• Monitor student alert list on SEVIS and insure full compliance with CUNYfirst SEVIS reporting requirements;
• Produce reports from CUNYfirst SEVIS based data
• Integrate CUNYfirst, SEVIS and FSO database insuring data integrity between databases;
• Employ SEVIS, CUNYfirst and FSO to produce integrated statistical reports
• Create accurate and comprehensive data keeping procedures to insure accurate tracking of all relevant international student information;
• Participate in on- and off-campus meetings, professional development programs, as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Experience with CUNYfirst/Peoplesoft.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft office Suite including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
