Tenure-track Assistant Professor in Vehicle Electrification and Power Electronics

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering


The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Kettering University seeks applicants for a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the broad areas of vehicle electrification and power electronics. The target date for appointment is July 1, 2022. Review of completed applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled.

The Department is particularly interested in applicants who have demonstrated expertise in vehicle electrification and advanced mobility technologies including power electronics, electric machine design, motor drive and control, and battery systems for electric vehicles. The successful candidate will have teaching experience in electrical engineering that includes laboratory instruction and experiential-based learning activities along with related professional experience outside academia. They will share our passion and dedication to outstanding undergraduate and graduate instruction and be expected to demonstrate a strong commitment to innovative teaching excellence and student learning. Furthermore, the successful candidate will be expected to develop a successful externally funded applied research program appropriate for Kettering University, and aligned with the teacher-scholar model.

Required qualifications include 1) a Ph.D. degree (or ABD with completion by time of appointment) in electrical engineering or a closely related field, 2) expertise and experience in developing and teaching courses in power electronics, electrical machines, motor drive and control systems, and a broad range of electrical engineering courses focused on vehicle electrification applications, 3) good oral and written communication skills in the English language, 4) proof of legal authority to work at Kettering University, and 5) an understanding and commitment to Kettering University values: Respect, Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, and Excellence.

It offers a unique and fully cooperative education program in which students alternate 11-week academic terms with 12-week work terms, beginning from the freshman year. On campus, classes are small and faculty-student interaction is strong.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) offers ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering, and concentrations in Mobility Systems, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Engineering within the Master of Science in Engineering degree program. The ECE Department has about 300 undergraduate students, 12 faculty and 3 staff members.  Its curricula emphasize hands-on learning and focus on practical applications with new initiatives in vehicle electrification and advanced mobility technologies. Extensive and excellent facilities include 16 instructional and research laboratories totaling more than 15,000 square feet. The newly developed Mobility Research Center provides a multi-use advanced mobility development proving ground enabling faculty research, sponsored projects, and contracted facility use.
