Assistant or Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering (AI/ ML)

Position Description: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University has an opening for a tenure-track faculty member to start August 22, 2022. CSU is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff, and student body. Depending on experience and qualifications, successful applicants may be appointed as Assistant Professor or Associate Profess.

The faculty position is open to applicants with research specialization in artificial intelligence, machine learning with a focus on thermal/fluids/energy, manufacturing, or bioengineering.

Tenure-track candidates are expected to continue or develop an externally funded research program and teach courses to meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills, a potential for industry collaboration, and an ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum Qualifications: All candidates must hold both an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering and an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely- related discipline with degree conferred on or before July 1, 2022. Successful candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research areas.

Preferred Qualifications: Excellent communication skills; Potential for industry collaboration; Potential for federal research funding; Potential for excellence in teaching; and ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

The Mechanical Engineering Department provides a rigorous education in the principles of mechanical engineering, supplemented by practical hands-on experience and communication skills to transform students into well-rounded and competent, ready-to-go engineers. The department offers doctoral, master’s, and an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree, with currently 400 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students [AvdB1]. Current areas of research include manufacturing, wind energy, turbomachinery, human-machine systems, rehabilitation engineering, and control systems.
