The University of Missouri-Columbia (“MU”), the flagship, land-grant, comprehensive research university of the University of Missouri System, seeks a Dean of the College of Arts and Science (“COAS”) who is a visionary, collegial, and strategic intellectual leader and who will engage and inspire the faculty, staff, and students of the College. MU has embarked on a bold vision to advance innovative and interdisciplinary research, prioritize student success, and enhance community engagement. The University recently unveiled MizzouForward and over the next decade, will make a $1.5B investment in its faculty and staff to achieve further excellence as a public flagship research institution.

As the largest college in the University, the College of Arts and Science plays a crucial role in advancing this transformational strategic vision, upholding MU’s standing in the American Association of Universities (AAU), and strengthening the brand behind an MU degree. The College has a wide variety of liberal arts programs, pioneering research initiatives, and outstanding graduate programs. In addition, the College is central to the academic mission of the University, responsible for teaching most of the core courses required of all undergraduate students on campus. The next Dean of the College of Arts and Science has a unique opportunity to work closely with faculty to innovate curriculum across all disciplines represented in the College, to create a cohesive vision for the next era of liberal arts education, to ensure that equity, diversity, and inclusion are central to the College’s academic mission and operations, and to advance research and scholarship in the humanities, the arts, and social sciences as well as the STEM disciplines. 

As the chief academic and administrative officer for the College, the Dean is responsible for ensuring excellence in education, research, service, practice, and community engagement. The Dean will encourage faculty, staff, and students to bring the work of the College and its resources out into the community so that they may continue to serve various university stakeholders, the city of Columbia, and the state of Missouri. The next Dean at COAS will work to develop new streams of support for the College’s diversity of scholarship and depth of student excellence and work tirelessly to support student success efforts. The ideal candidate will be an accomplished scholar with a track record of transformative leadership and an understanding of and passionate commitment to the liberal arts, humanities, and sciences. The Dean will bring a demonstrated record of collaborative leadership in a highly matrixed environment, bring high energy and passion for the College’s educational and research mission, and have significant depth of managerial and fundraising experience.
