About the FIU Department of Interior Architecture and the School of Architecture

Within the College of Communication, Architecture + The Arts, the Department of Interior Architecture resides in the School of Architecture with the Department of Architecture and the Department of Landscape Architecture + Environmental and Urban Design. All three departments share a rich history of interdisciplinary design and research collaboration. With over 135 students, FIU’s Department of Interior Architecture educates students in the profession of interior architecture to become thoughtful practitioners and critical thinkers. Students enter the program at various points in their educational careers—as freshmen, as third-year transfer students, and as graduate students to pursue a CIDA accredited, professional Master of Interior Architecture degree. The department also offers a post-professional Master of Arts in Interior Architecture in which students have opportunities to teach, research, and explore independent topics in healthcare design in close collaboration with our full-time faculty.

The School of Architecture facilities are housed in the award-wining Paul L. Cejas School of Architecture Building designed by Bernard Tschumi, which includes the Fabrication; Robotics + Digital Fabrication; and Structural + Environmental Technologies Labs. Additional facilities include collaborative hubs such as the Miami Beach Urban Studios that houses 3D printing technologies, and the Mana Wynwood facility that encourages trans-disciplinary approaches to communication and journalism; architecture and urbanism; arts education; research/creative activities; and community engagement. Through real-world experiential-learning opportunities conducted through FIU by Design, our faculty and expert professionals align our pedagogy with project deliverables for a wide range of clients and organizations. The School of Architecture also offers a minimal-residency Doctor of Design program, providing specialized credentials for advanced professional and applied academic research.

Faculty members in Interior Architecture are engaged in a variety of research and innovative teaching activities. While we address the specific interior typologies of our region --ranging from healthcare to hospitality, retail, and workplace design-- we also engage in focused programs such as Cruise Ship and Super Yacht Design, and Health Care Design. The department values and leverages its relationship with the professional Interior Architecture community. To enhance student learning and support faculty research, we offer a diverse range of study abroad programs. Our degree programs are gateways to preparing graduates who embrace the current and future worlds, and we strive to educate responsible and inspiring design leaders.
