The College of Humanities and Fine Arts at Coastal Carolina University invites applications for a tenure-track position beginning August 2022 as Assistant Professor of American Civil Rights and Social Justice History. Preference will be given to applicants with a sub-field and/or significant experience in public history.

We seek candidates who are committed to teaching at the undergraduate level, to potential teaching excellence at the graduate level, and to pursuing an active scholarly agenda. The preferred candidate will hold a Ph.D. in history but consideration may also be given to applicants in related fields with a focus on the Civil Rights Movement and Social Justice in the United States. The successful candidate will teach survey courses in U.S. history and upper-level courses in U.S. Civil Rights history and social justice history and may contribute to current and future public history courses and initiatives.

We are looking to grow the number of faculty members whose scholarship, teaching, and community engagement focus on the culture, history, and artistic expression of the African Diaspora Community in the United States. While the academic appointment will be in the Department of History, we are especially interested in hiring new faculty members who pursue their scholarship within an interdisciplinary framework and who can be appointed as Affiliate Faculty in our Joyner Institute for Gullah and African Diaspora Studies and are able to contribute to the growth of such programs as the existing Minor in African and African Diaspora Studies and to future academic programs in Africana Studies, African American fine and performing arts, advocacy, and leadership.
