Assistant or Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering (SSM/RE)

Position Description: The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University has an opening for a tenure-track faculty member to start  August 22, 2022. Depending on experience and qualifications, successful applicants may be appointed as Assistant Professor or Associate Professor.

The faculty position is open to applicants with research specialization in Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing (SSM), Renewable Energy (RE), or Biomedical. Tenure-track candidates are expected to continue or develop an externally funded research program and teach courses to meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. Successful candidates will possess excellent communication skills, the potential for industry collaboration, and an ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering
  2. Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline
  3. Evidence of research experience in Smart and Sustainable Manufacturing,  or Renewable Energy

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Excellent communication skills
  2. Potential for industry collaboration
  3. Potential for federal research funding
  4. Potential for excellence in teaching
  5. Ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity, and excellence of the academic community

Cleveland State University is a state-assisted metropolitan university in the city of Cleveland with approximately 17,000 students. The university is well-known for its interdisciplinary programs, enjoying partnerships with prominent industrial corporations (Parker Hannifin, Rockwell Automation, Swagelok, etc.) and the NASA Glenn Research Center. The Mechanical Engineering Department provides a rigorous education in the principles of mechanical engineering, supplemented by practical hands-on experience and communication skills to transform students into well-rounded and competent, ready-to-go engineers. The department offers doctoral, master’s, and an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree, with currently 400 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students [AvdB1]. Current areas of research include manufacturing, wind energy, turbomachinery, human-machine systems, rehabilitation engineering, and control systems.

Offer of employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of the University’s verification of credentials (including evidence of a Ph.D.) by July 1, 2022 and other information required by law and/or University policies or practices, including but not limited to a criminal background check. Hiring is contingent on maintaining existing levels of funding from the state of Ohio.
