The George Mason University School of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism Management within the College of Education and Human Development invites applications for an open rank, tenure-track or tenured position in Recreation Management. The program seeks a versatile scholar who can contribute individually and collaboratively to the School’s teaching, research, and service obligations. About the School:

The School of Sport, Recreation, and Tourism Management (SRTM) is located on the George Mason University (Mason) Fairfax, Virginia campus. As an integral unit of an R1 institution, the School offers high-quality and impactful academic programs. The Recreation Management (RMGT) program is committed to an ongoing relationship with recreation providers within and beyond the university. Our BS RMGT degree provides concentrations in Parks and Outdoor Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, as well as the opportunity to formulate an individualized concentration. It is accredited through the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COAPRT) and the therapeutic recreation concentration meets National Council on Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC) requirements. The MS degree in Sport and Recreation Studies, concentration in Recreation Administration (RADM) integrates theory and practice to enable strong professional education and preparation for advanced study. An interdisciplinary PhD is available in the College for appropriately focused and interested students. The School of SRTM recognizes sport, recreation, and tourism to be synergistic facets of a broad industry, which is reflected in the curriculum and school initiatives.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities include teaching core and concentration courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as mentoring capstone opportunities; continuing or developing a consequential research agenda, including publishing in top-tier outlets and soliciting extramural funding; providing collaborative leadership within RMGT, RADM and the School; and influencing the industry/profession.

Required Qualifications: 

Applicants must have received a PhD in Recreation or a related field by the time they begin the position. Applicants should have a portfolio of accomplishments that demonstrates their strong commitment to and excellence in teaching, research, and service.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants in all areas of recreation will be given serious consideration, including but not limited to: community, parks and outdoor, commercial, inclusive/therapeutic, and socio-cultural dimensions of recreation. Administrative and practitioner experience is highly valued and desired. Preference will be given to candidates with a clear commitment to equity, inclusion, and diversity in recreation.
