Description/Job Summary

Reporting to the Manager of Accounting the Senior Accountant is responsible for applying accounting principles and procedures to analyze financial information, prepare accurate and timely financial reports and statements and ensure appropriate accounting control procedures. The position is also responsible for monitoring GAAP and accounting regulations to ensure assigned processes and procedures comply with current regulations and represent good internal control. Reporting requirements include, the integrity of the College’s integrated financial system and databases, monitoring accounting information to ensure accuracy, and timely and complete financial reporting. The Senior Accountant is also responsible for designing and producing regular analytics for internal reporting and complex year-end audit work papers along with monthly, quarterly and annual analysis for the assigned Statement of Activity and Balance Sheet accounts. The position will work independently with external and internal auditors for assigned audits. The Senior Accountant will have frequent contact with multiple departments throughout the College.

Responsibilities/Duties
  • Prepares and examine expenditure reports, financial statements, and reports of historical trends for program Managers, management and state agencies;
  • Reviews general ledger transactions to ensure accuracy and complete journal entries;
  • Performs monthly and year-end analyses, reconciliations, and financial reporting for assigned accounts;
  • Works closely with the Grants department to reconcile ledgers and student account for Pell, SEOG, and other student financial assistance programs;
  • Develops and maintains routine and ad hoc reports for use by program managers and administrators of the College grant programs;
  • Performs grant-related post-award functions, including budget and expense analysis, periodic invoicing, financial reporting, labor distribution changes and associated communications with customers, reconciliations, and re-budgeting;
  • Performs grant closeout functions required by Grants and Contracts Administration and sponsors including reconciliations, financial status reports, final invoices, purchase order liquidations, zeroing out budgets, and final reporting;
  • Monitors sponsored project activity throughout project lifecycle ensuring compliance with College and sponsor policies (cost overruns, cost sharing, unallowable expenses, etc.), and perform complex and detailed reconciliations with minimal supervision;
  • Plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate complex accounting projects; perform special analytical tasks as assigned by the Manager of Accounting or designee;
  • Communicates with various College personnel and outside agencies to provide high-level financial analysis and ad hoc financial reports and recommendations; Prepare cash, inventory and distribution reports for the College’s Bookstore;
  • Assist the Manager of Accounting in overseeing functions in both the Accounts Receivable and Finance modules;
  • Participates in statutory year-end closing of College records and preparation of related reports;
  • Prepares year-end audit schedules, accruals, prepaid expenses and assets, inventory, cash position and adjusting journal entries;
  • Reconciles and review of Accounts receivable, including reserve for bad debt calculations;
  • Prepares interdepartmental journals for liquidation of department charges;
  • Prepares journal entries for month-end, daily recording of entries from subsystems, and participates in month-end closing of the College records and preparation of related reports.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s in accounting or related field.
  • At least 5-7 years of accounting/finance experience.
