Basic Function:
The Associate Director of Student Life reports to the Director of Student Life. This senior member of the Student Life team plans, organizes, and provides leadership to comprehensive student life programs and systems. The Associate Director is responsible for day-to-day operations, supervision, facilities, and budget for several areas including: Student Engagement & Involvement, Wellness Resources, Associated Students of California Lutheran University, Graduate and Professional Student Council, Clubs and Organizations, staff development, various campus collaborations, New Student Orientation, marketing, and other programming related to student life. The Associate Director directly supervises three professional staff members.

Representative Duties:
  • Direct supervision of professional staff coordinators and both direct and indirect supervision of undergraduate student interns and graduate assistants. E
  • Oversee staff training and professional development of direct reports. E
  • Advisement of student government organizations. E
  • Oversee the following areas with-in the Student Life office: Orientation Programs (Peer Advisors, New Student/Transfer/Family/Spring Orientation programming), Wellness Resources and Clubs and Organizations. E
  • Oversee marketing (campus policy and product development) for the Student Life office.
  • Develop and direct programs associated with student engagement for various student populations. E
  • Supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned interns and student staff. E
  • Develop and implement large-scale co-curricular programming during the academic year and summer terms. E
  • Manage budget for areas of direct oversight. E
  • Develop and implement programs to facilitate leadership and academic collaboration. E
  • Oversee appropriate assessments of programs and outcomes for assigned areas. E
  • Contribute to the overall goals of the Student Life office and as an active participant in the university community. E
  • Partner with faculty, Student Affairs and University offices to ensure Student Life’s place as an integral part of the academic mission of the institution. E
  • Participate in events and initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs and on behalf of Student Life, which may include regular participation in nights and weekend programs and events. E
  • Support division wide projects and programs, such as Homecoming Week & Family Weekend, and Admitted Student Day. E
  • Stay abreast of current CLU, regional and national trends related to student life areas through such means as professional association memberships, listservs, relationships with other institutions, and attendance at appropriate professional conferences. E
  • Increase avenues of communication with students by maintaining visibility, availability, and approachability. E
  • Provide leadership on projects as assigned. E
  • Be available as necessary, often including events and weekends, to meet student and staff needs and address concerns. E
  • Serve as department liaison with other areas of the University. E
  • Assist with general problem solving and crisis intervention, stabilizing situations, and coordinating the notification of the appropriate college officials/referral agencies. E
  • Participate in various aspects of the Student Life office and provide general assistance to the Director of Student Life, and general Student Life staff as needed. E
  • Serve on campus wide and Student Affairs related committees as needed. E
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination equivalent to: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and five years of progressively responsible experience as an administrator in Student Affairs or related work (can include graduate level experience) including a minimum of one year of experience in a supervisory capacity of professional staff.

Preferred Qualifications:
A Master’s degree is preferred. Additionally, experience in one or more of the following areas: New Student Orientation, recreational sports (intramurals, outdoor recreation), wellness programming (alcohol and other drugs prevention, sexual assault prevention education, etc.), student government/clubs & organization advising, transition and retention programs, and First Year experience programming.
Demonstrated commitment to and success working in diverse, multi-cultural and multi-racial communities.

Licenses and Other Requirements:
Valid California Driver’s License for occasional job-related travel which may include driving students.
Some weekends & evenings are required.
