Head of the Department of Physics

The Eberly College of Science at Penn State invites applications for the position of George A. and Margaret M. Downsbrough Head of the Department of Physics The department has a world class research faculty that is growing in diversity, a highly ranked graduate program, and a prominent educational mission. The department is also in the process of expanding and renovating its buildings.

We are seeking an individual who will continue to strategically lead and support growth in excellence and diversity. The ideal candidate would hold the position at the rank of professor. Candidates for the position should have demonstrated superior administrative or leadership skills, qualifying them to play a key role in the further development of the department, and should have a distinguished record of internationally recognized leadership in research as well as a strong record of teaching and mentoring. The candidate should possess proven ability to develop and manage budgets and staff; effectiveness in advocating for excellence in research and education; program and administrative leadership experience or strong evidence of the potential for program and administrative leadership; excellence in written and oral communication; strong interpersonal and networking skills; and an ability to provide an inclusive environment for all faculty, staff, and students. It is also expected that the candidate will be a scientific leader in the department by continuing their research efforts. Ph.D. in physics or closely related field.

The initial term as department head will be 3 years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional term as deemed appropriate by the Dean.
