Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development

 

The Mason Office of Graduate Education seeks an Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development to manage central professional and career development for graduate students as well as post-doctoral and Master of Fine Arts fellows.

 

The Associate Director will organize and coordinate efforts to develop and implement a sustainable structure of support towards students’ and fellows’ professional competencies and career readiness. The design and execution of this initiative will involve a close collaboration with central offices, and academic units and their respective faculty and staff members.

About the Position:

The Associate Director for Graduate Professional and Career Development will be responsible for:

  • Assessing existing programs and services focused on graduate professional and career development and working with a variety of academic units, disciplines, and offices across the University to coordinate offerings in relation to the needs of students and fellows;
  • Guiding the collection and analysis of data on experiences and career outcomes for students and fellows across the University;
  • Leading the development and implementation of new programs and opportunities in support of students’ and fellows’ educational, professional and career needs and goals;
  • Creating a system that helps students and fellows identify and sequence intentional and progressive professional development experiences that align with their goals;
  • Developing, implementing, and managing the programming of multi-career preparation for doctoral students within and beyond the academy;
  • Designing, implementing, and managing a program to effectively connect students and fellows to identified external professional and career development resources and opportunities;
  • Organizing and presenting regular seminars, workshops, and other events designed to support career and professional development;
  • Creating and continually enhancing web-based resources on graduate professional and career development for students, fellows, and other graduate stakeholders; and
  • Developing and maintaining a communication plan for the newly developed programs that ensure timely and accurate delivery of information, news, and events.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree and extensive related experience (typically 10+ years) in higher education OR doctoral degree and considerable experience (typically 5+ years) in higher education, by time of hire OR an equivalent combination of education and work experience;
  • Relevant experience in program design and/or management for professional and career development at the graduate and post-graduate level in a higher education setting;
  • Strong desire to work with graduate students, post-doctoral and MFA fellows, faculty and administrators from a wide range of disciplines and schools;
  • Understanding of unique professional and career development needs of graduate students and post-doctoral and MFA fellows of diverse backgrounds, interests, and disciplines and best practices for fostering a campus-wide culture of graduate student professional and career development;
  • Experience developing and implementing strategic and impactful initiatives;
  • Excellent project management skills with experience managing multiple, simultaneous work streams;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication (e.g., presentation to a variety of audiences) and interpersonal skills;
  • Proven proficiency with computers including software systems and applications (e.g., databases, analysis);
  • Ability to simultaneously manage multiple priorities;
  • Ability to develop and utilize tools and processes to collect, analyze, and report data;
  • Ability to work well in a diverse environment;
  • Ability to think critically, make independent decisions, and take initiative as appropriate;
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a team environment;
  • Demonstrate high level of organizational skills as required for specific position; and
  • Adhere to University policies and procedures to meet Institutional goals and support University’s mission for graduate student academic success.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree and at least 10 years of related experience.

The Office of Graduate Education, within the Office of the Provost, supports Mason graduate programs and ensures the academic success of more than 10,800 graduate students while upholding the quality and rigor of graduate education at Mason. Our office, in conjunction with academic units and partners across all of our campuses, undertakes a myriad of functions to provide this support. These include facilitating curricular enhancements, administering graduate policies and procedures, and providing internal and external funding opportunities.
