Job Details

The Bates College Program in Environmental Studies invites interdisciplinary scholars to apply for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position centered on climate justice, broadly conceived, beginning August, 2022. Scholars and artists trained in any relevant social science or humanities discipline are welcome to apply. We are especially interested in individuals comfortable working outside of narrow disciplinary silos. This work may highlight the agency of people from historically marginalized groups and intersect with one or more of the following topics or fields: African studies, animal studies, Asian studies, Black studies, decolonization, gender and sexuality studies, Indigenous studies, policy, public health, science and technology studies.

The successful scholar or artist will contribute to a multi-disciplinary program in which all students undertake significant coursework in the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities. The position carries a five-course teaching load, which could include the program’s core introductory courses on the environmental humanities or social sciences, mid- and upper-level electives in the candidate’s fields of interest, upper-division courses in the program core, as well as first-year seminars. There are also expectations for undergraduate and senior thesis advising and institutional service.

We specifically seek applications from individuals with the ability to contribute to the continuing commitment of both the Environmental Studies Program and Bates College to equity and inclusion. The search committee expects applicants to identify their relevant strengths and experiences and to describe how their research, teaching, and/or outreach can further these commitments of the program and college. We strongly encourage applications from individuals in underrepresented groups and individuals who have followed non-traditional pathways to higher education due to societal, economic, or academic disadvantages.

Qualifications

Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. or other terminal degree by August 1, 2022, when the position begins.

Application Instructions

Review of applications begins on January 3, 2022, and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants should submit the following: a cover letter (including a brief overview of scholarly work and a list of potential courses), curriculum vitae (including a list of referees), and three statements of 1-2 pages each that address the candidate's teaching philosophy, research or artistic agenda, and past and/or potential contributions to equity and inclusion with regard to underrepresented groups. Applicants should also anticipate providing a sample of their artistic or written work as well as three letters of recommendation in the event that they are contacted for an interview. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check.
