Job Description:

Summary: Supports the Coordinator, Veteran Services in the support and assistance of veterans and their dependents in the use of Veterans Administration educational assistance programs and other financial aid for which they may qualify. Financial Aid programs include grants, loans, scholarships, work study, and outside agency programs. The Specialist will assist with the day to day operations of the Veteran Services Department and will report to the Coordinator, Veteran Services.

Duties and Responsibilities: This position is a full-time career service position. Duties and responsibilities include processing VA Educational benefit requests; providing assistance to veterans and eligible dependents during the registration process; providing Financial Aid and Veterans Services expertise during student onboarding activities; conducting counseling prior to a VA student's cessation of attendance; reviewing individual electronic files for accuracy and completeness; awarding Financial Aid to students; reviewing work of support staff; assisting federal, state, and institutional auditors; counseling students with unusual financial aid circumstances; assisting Financial Aid and Veterans Services administrators with record retention decisions and responsible for daily operations of Financial Aid and Veterans Services Office during absence of administrators. The successful candidate may be occasionally required to travel, in-district and overnight, and may be required to work evenings and weekends for special projects or events, and to meet deadlines. This position reports to the Coordinator, Veteran Services.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited institution with an associate’s degree or its equivalent. Relevant work experience may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-to-year basis. Successful results of a criminal background check are required.

Pursuant to College policy, it is an employment eligibility requirement for an applicant to meet the requirements of § 435.04(2), Florida Statutes, related to background investigations. Any person failing to meet the requirements of the statute will be deemed not qualified to hold employment in this position. A Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) approved background check will be conducted on every successful candidate as a condition of employment, and any person who fails to disclose any adverse information contained in the background investigation at the time of submitting the employment application will be disqualified from employment.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior military service or experience working with the unique needs of veterans and military families and their benefits is preferred.
