Job Description Summary

The Florida Polytechnic University, Department of Environmental Engineering seeks candidates for an Instructor of Chemistry with broad teaching capacity that supports all undergraduate curriculum in all STEM programs. The successful candidate will be highly capable of delivering courses and laboratories including Chemistry 1, Chemistry 2, and supporting first year program activities.

At Florida Polytechnic University, the chemistry courses are under the Department of Environmental Engineering and serve students in all undergraduate programs including engineering, mathematics, physics, and computer science majors. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching in the classroom as well as in the laboratory. They should have a strong interest in academic success of first year undergraduate students and collaborating with others supporting university initiatives to prepare students for our STEM degrees.

This position is part of a strategic expansion of the university faculty that will add approximately twenty faculty to the current approximate 60 faculty members in nine separate departments. As a part of this faculty expansion, the department will be emphasizing and improving its current teaching mission and putting in place a research presence for the department. Relatively near-term plans include a Master’s degree program for the Environmental Engineering department with a focus on water and activities associated with FIPR (the Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute) with over 40-years of history in central Florida.

Applicant must demonstrate the ability to develop a highly successful teaching program, supervise undergraduate students, and to teach effectively in lecture and laboratory courses. In addition, the candidate is expected to assist in the broader education mission of the department.

Job Description

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry or closely related discipline.
DESIRED / PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Teaching and/or relevant research/industry experience
  • Experience in curriculum delivery and development
  • Experience with students’ academic mentoring
  • Experience in program assessment and execution of a continuous improvement plan.
  • Prior professional US experience with progressive responsibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with a diverse campus community.
