To perform a variety of skilled plumbing and general construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair and remodeling of District buildings and facilities; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives direction from an assigned supervisor. Exercises functional and technical oversight over lower level staff and plumbing tasks and projects, as assigned. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker I and II classifications II by the level of responsibility assumed and the complexity of duties assigned. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series including exercising functional and technical oversight over lower level staff. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.
  1. Plan, train and review the work of staff responsible for performing a variety of skilled plumbing and general construction duties supporting the maintenance, repair and remodeling of District buildings and facilities.
  2. Plan, coordinate and participate in performing rough and finished plumbing work from beginning to end.
  3. Read and follow blueprints, shop drawings and sketches supporting the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities; estimate materials and obtain quotes for the purchase of materials in compliance with District purchasing procedures.
  4. Perform rough and finish plumbing duties at the journeyman level; repair and install all plumbing related equipment and systems throughout the campus, replace as required; perform a variety of plumbing-related preventive maintenance functions. Repair water lines.
  5. Repair and maintain storm and area drainage system components.
  6. Oversee the use, care and operation of a variety of plumbing equipment and tools including, but not limited to, saws, snakes, drills, sanders, grinders, drill presses and various hand tools of the trade.
  7. Oversee the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
  8. Attend and participate in various project meetings; update project status and provide information on projected completion.
  9. Respond to and resolve various emergency and routine calls for service.
  10. Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

  • Principles, procedures and terminology used in the plumbing trade.

  • Characteristics of various types of pipe/metals/fixtures/equipment.
  • Operational characteristics of a variety of plumbing and hand tools.

  • Independently perform the most difficult skilled plumbing tasks.

  • Correctly use and apply a variety of plumbing skills.
  • Read and interpret plans and blueprints.
  • Measure and cut materials precisely.
  • Coordinate the completion of assigned projects with other skilled staff.
  • Operate all plumbing equipment and tools effectively and safely.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Sensitivity to and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic, ethnic backgrounds and disabilities of community college students and staff.
  • Frequent to continuous walking and standing; moderate lifting and carrying requirements; frequent power and simple grasping; frequent bending and twisting at the waist and neck.
Education and Experience Requirements: Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or the equivalent; journey level certification Experience:
Three (3) years of responsible journey level plumbing experience. Licenses/Special Requirements: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license. Ability to obtain a forklift operator's license. Ability to obtain asbestos certification. Additional Information
