This is a full-time lead position, which provides technical leadership in the support of the campus learning management system, databases, portals, and its integration with all third party tools, dashboard, and systems. This position is responsible for the support, design, development, implementation, programming, delivery, and maintenance of resources used for primary front-end and back-end tools and functions. This position is also responsible for managing or generating the learning ecosystem related feed-files, database and necessary programming for required dashboard, portal, automation of workflow, and/or reports.


The individual sought for this position will take the lead responsibility for all learning systems administration and both front-end and back-end technical and functional support.

  • Proactively identify problems, develop, maintain and operate various technologies used in the delivery of instructional programs and courses.
  • Identify root causes, solve functional and technical problems, investigate and seek solutions to complex issues, and perform installation, maintenance of the system(s), or replacement of various integrated tools for LMS.
  • In coordination with the eLearning Specialists, system administrators, ensure all LMS configurations, procedures, and workflow are documented and with diagrams if necessary.
  • Work with various departments and/or vendors to program/generate/test/implement feedfiles for any learning systems or tools. Sometimes this might be the configuration of the middleware among systems.
  • Give individual or group instruction to the user(s), or make arrangements for instruction of software or systems.
  • Support faculty technical requests at all tiers when necessary.
  • Mentor system administrators to perform various technical or functional tasks related to the teaching and learning ecosystem.
  • Generate reports and/or create dashboards as needed to show learning system and tools usage.
  • Develop automation on processes to streamline system tasks.
  • Develop program specifications, write code, and review them with the user to ensure that requirements are met.
  • Design user-friendly interfaces to systems, applications, and databases.
  • Recommend modifications to third party software to meet user needs.
  • Provide reports or dashboard when requested using various learning system databases and additional developer tools or programming.
  • Review and improve system operations practices.
  • Provide expert recommendations to Sr. Director of the Online Campus on any system issues or improvement of the learning ecosystem.
  • Lead the migration of the system(s) when needed.
  • Provide immediate response to problems and emergency situations affecting normal learning ecosystem operations.
  • Perform tasks outside business hours is expected.
  • Perform capacity, stability, and viability analysis/planning for database, data storage and learning ecosystem performance.
  • Perform system security & privacy audit.
  • Develop and assign databases using database management packages/systems.
  • Develop policies and procedures for access to all learning systems and databases.
  • Proactively review systems (all systems used by the Office of the Online Campus) performance.
  • Work closely with appropriate external vendors or departments to ensure efficient functionality of the systems or tools.

Lead system administrators, student assistants.

  • Lead system administrators and graduate/work-study students.

Support other office projects and related functions.

  • Support other department staff members on other online teaching and learning initiatives related tasks.

  • Basic knowledge of data and file structures, database systems and related utilities, operating systems, and communication interface programs.
  • Ability to perform system, database, and network maintenance tasks and to use standard software packages.
  • Knowledge of network system configuration, protocols, and/or transmission media.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot system connection and interface malfunctions.
  • General knowledge of operating systems and hardware for problem identification and analysis.
  • Knowledge of copyright laws and industry standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to assist others in completing work assignments including the ability to provide basic work direction and training.


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study OR Bachelor’s degree with significant work experience as system administrator, programmer, software Developer, system analyst, etc.
  • Knowledge of SQL, JavaScript, HTML, CSS.
  • Knowledge of multiple programming languages such as Python, ColdFusion, C++, etc.
  • Knowledge of SaaS, networking, and cloud-based infrastructure such as AWS.


  • 8+ years of extensive work experience center around the infrastructure of Learning Management System, and programming needed for automation or supporting of workflow in relation to the teaching and learning processes.
  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Knowledge of Tableau, Snowflake, PeopleSoft, SAIP, MuleSoft, API, Rest API, Oauth2, and/or Dell Boomi.
  • Knowledge of Flask, WSGI, Docker, MongoDB, NLTK, and/or AWS infrastructure.


Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.  Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
