Job Summary

CU Boulder is looking for an experienced, creative multimedia storyteller to join its award-winning news team. The person in this position will have a passion for storytelling and demonstrated ability to tell meaningful, longform multimedia stories and to turn packages linking CU Boulder experts to current events.

The multimedia news specialist will develop and implement storytelling through journalistic-style videography, photography and other multimedia elements for various audiences, including external media. The specialist will use a range of skills––including shooting, editing, scripting and packaging video––to create content that audiences remember, share and promote. The work supports the university’s strategic plans and priorities.

Who We Are

Strategic Relations and Communications facilitate an integrated approach to campus-wide marketing and communications to encourage greater CU Boulder engagement, affinity and support.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

Shooting, editing, and/or writing content for multiple platforms.
  • Identify compelling news stories highlighting CU Boulder research or tying CU Boulder experts into current events.
  • Write, capture quality visual content for, edit and package creative and interesting multimedia stories for the website, news media and social media that align with CU Boulder’s brand standards and advance CU Boulder’s reputation.
  • Produce broadcast-ready interviews for distribution to news media.
  • Collaborate with the news team to identify visual storytelling opportunities across the campus.
  • Develop relationships with university stakeholders to promote high-impact research that advances the mission of the institution.
  • Stay on top of and learn evolving storytelling methods to meet audiences’ demands for information consumption.
  • Take responsibility for and care of video production equipment.
  • Ensure proper archiving of footage.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This position is a fully in-person or in-person/hybrid position.
  • Availability on some evenings and weekends may be required.
  • This position requires carrying video and audio equipment around the CU Boulder campus. You should be able to carry up to 35 lbs.

What We Can Offer

The salary range for this position is $52,000-$65,000.

What We Require
  • A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university or an equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
  • Three years of broadcast news experience or equivalent combination of education and journalism or communications work experience.
  • Advanced visual storytelling skills, applicable to video production and post-production.
What You Will Need
  • Experience and skills in producing (shooting and editing) broadcast-ready video and audio.
  • Experience in Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere, Audition, PhotoShop and After Effects), or similar software.
  • The ability to break down sometimes complex research into engaging video and written content that anyone can understand.
  • A creative mind with the ability to think outside the box to tell meaningful stories that resonate with a wide audience.
  • Knowledge of the daily news cycle.
  • Must be a self starter who understands how to get at a story, how to follow through on story development and how to report in a concise, accurate manner.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
What We Would Like You To Have
  • Demonstrated ability to apply the following video storytelling production techniques: scripting, composition, lighting, digital effects.
  • Experience working in a digital asset management system.
  • Demonstrated writing ability with working knowledge of grammar and AP style.
  • Experience creating and optimizing media for various formats, including but not limited to: broadcast, web-based distribution and livestreaming (H.264, MP4, MOV, Zoom).
