About the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning
The School of Planning (SOP) in the College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati (UC) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant or associate professor (rank and title commensurate with credentials) focused on research, teaching, and service in Urban Design and Planning.

The position is to commence employment on August 15, 2022.

The School of Planning
The SOP prepares professionals for distinguished practice and spatially based approaches with a focus on “livable places,” and the creation of “communities that enrich people’s lives.” The SOP academic programs (PhD in Regional Development Planning, Master of Community Planning (MCP), Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA), Bachelor of Science in Horticulture (BSHort), Bachelor of Science in Urban Studies (BSUS), Bachelor of Urban Planning (BUP) offer specific coursework about the planning and design of innovative futures for urban communities and regions. The MCP’s three concentrations include:  Design & Development; Environmental Planning; and Economic Development Planning. Certificate programs are available for Cannabis Studies, Green Roofs, Historic Preservation, Public Art and Placemaking, Sustainable Landscape Design, Urban Agriculture, and Urban Design. The SOP’s MCP, MLA, and BUP programs follow a cooperative education model (co-op) originated at UC in 1906.  UC’s program is one of the largest such programs in the world. In addition, the SOP has a Coverdell Fellows Program for Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and offers a joint MCP-JD degree. The SOP’s MCP program is ranked by Planetizen as first among small schools, fourth in the Midwest and 20th in the nation. Both the BUP and the MCP programs have been accredited since the 1960’s and each has more than 1,000 graduates. The MLA program is currently in candidacy for accreditation and graduates are employed nationally.

Essential Functions
The selected candidate will teach and conduct research in Urban Design and Planning, and in other closely related areas such as physical planning and environmental design. There will be potential to collaborate in teaching and research with faculty in Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. All SOP faculty are expected to teach two courses per semester in a combination of studio, lecture, or workshop settings. SOP faculty may teach related courses at the introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate levels in their expertise. Related courses may include but are not limited to site planning, regional planning, senior capstone, plan-making workshop, graphics and communication, landscape resource analysis, history of urban form, and urban design seminar. This tenure track position requires research or creative work in the successful candidate’s area of expertise and dissemination of their research or creative work through appropriate venues, including but not limited to peer-reviewed publications, conferences, and exhibitions.

In addition, faculty may advise masters and doctoral students. Further, full-time SOP faculty serve on various School, College, and/or University committees SOP faculty serve on various School, College, University, professional, or community committees such as SOP Curriculum, DAAP Library, Faculty Senate, AAUP, APA, AIA, ASLA or ACSP.

Minimum Requirements
All the following are required prior to the effective date of the appointment.

At the assistant professor rank:

  • PhD degree in Urban Planning or closely related discipline
  • Published at least one article in a peer-reviewed journal
  • One academic term of university level teaching experience in urban design or closely related field

At the associate professor rank:

  • PhD degree in Urban Planning or closely related discipline
  • Hold Tenure Status
