CSU East Bay’s Online Campus is charged with supporting the implementation of quality standards for online and hybrid courses, increasing the number of online courses/programs offered, supporting the majority of functions, tasks, and duties related to learning management system(s) [Including core LMS and all the connected platforms/Building Blocks/LTI], online courses design, and all other support initiatives requested by the Office of Academic Affairs.

This position in Online Campus requires the ability to make independent decisions and execute sound judgment in a variety of consulting situations. There is a need to develop training materials for print, the web, and workshops. The position researches and recommends appropriate technology tools and processes in order to solve problems that might affect the entire teaching and learning ecosystem. This position acts as a campus LMS administrator and supports users who have technical problems related to the LMS or any learning tools for online or hybrid instruction. This position also acts as functional and some degree of technical system administrator for all other systems that are managed by the Office of the Online Campus or assigned by the Office of Academic Affairs. This includes but is not limited to systems such ClassClimate, Panopto,TurnItIn, etc.


Consult with other system administrators, vendors, eLearning Specialists, and users in the use of the LMS and learning tools/technologies. Includes system administrative support and instructional support. Includes coordination of testing, updating, upgrading, troubleshooting, and support issues from a system admin perspective, faculty course creation/usage perspective, and student portal/class usage perspective.

Respond to faculty, student, and staff inquiries within 24 hours.

  • LMS support desk, Tier 1 and 2 support for faculty and Tier 2 support for students as needed (Library Learning Common as Tier 1 support for students).
  • Examples include, but are not limited to: answering support line phone calls, emails, SN tickets from ITS, supporting the Online Campus team on system questions, and opening tickets with ITS technical and/or LMS/applications vendors

Monitoring, troubleshooting, and providing Learning systems’ support and document solutions.

  • This is defined as Tier 1 and/or 2.
  • This includes hosting Online Campus Virtual Office Hours.
  • Examples include but are not limited to: monitoring system connectivity, troubleshooting connectivity, login, account, and course management issues; escalate trouble tickets to the appropriate department, vendor technical support line; monitor tickets; and documentation of processes.
  • Administrative system perspective 

    This position acts as a campus functional and limited technical LMS and other system used by the department or assigned by the Office of the Academic Affairs. Examples include, but are not limited to:

    • Working with technical application team and vendor on production/development/testing environment.
    • Coordinating system planning/update/upgrade/maintenance with vendors.
    • Graphic User Interface (GUI) looks and feels [such as tabs, modules, and landing pages] configuration.
    • GUI related updating/configuring (Building Blocks/LTI [functional and limited technical system administrative related only]), and system functional testing.
    • Test applications on testing/staging environment during upgrade/update prior to the production launch

    Implement new services/tools from beginning to end.

    Modify basic web-based coding on LMS system or Online Campus website (limited HTML, Javascript, etc.).

    Attend and participate in all related support meetings.

    Design, develop and execute original training material for faculty, staff, and students.

    1. Analyze needs and design appropriate training materials for supported software, technology tools, and course management systems.
    2. Develop and administer training material to other support staff and faculty.
    3. Documents will be accurate, clear, and grammatically correct.
    4. Training materials will be designed for multiple delivery modes (print, web, and face to face workshops).
    5. Documentation and training material will be updated annually.
    6. Keep content/modules up-to-date for all LMS landing pages, support documentations, and user interface tabs.

    Participate in special projects and additional duties as assigned

  • Active participation in Online Campus new projects or initiatives.
  • Research and keep up-to-date on the next generation of systems or systems available in the market (such as Canvas, Blackboard, D2L, etc.).
  • Initiate ICT review for applications as needed.
  • Assist other Online Campus team members with tasks related to faculty support when requested by the Sr. Director of the Online Campus. For example, supporting Online End of Course Survey operation.

    • Strong customer service best practices.
    • Basic knowledge of web page design concepts.
    • Demonstrated proficiency and knowledge of the following computer systems and software:
      1. PC desktops/laptops
      2. Apple desktop/laptops
      3. Internet Architecture and Access
      4. MacOS/Window OS/Internet Browsers
    • Must be able to lift computing equipment weighing up to 20 pounds without assistance. For equipment that weighs more than 20 pounds, the person is expected to request assistance.
    • Must be able to work after-hour and/or weekend for system/maintenance, and emergency situations. 


    • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, educational technology, communications, or related fields, or similar certified coursework in applicable fields of study.
    • Knowledge of managing and supporting web-based systems.
    • Basic web page design concepts. 


    • Experience in training, instructional design/technology, information science.
    • User technical support experience.
    • LMS (any LMS) admin experience or cloud-based large-scale system. 


    Satisfactory completion of a background check (including LiveScan, as appropriate), that may include, but is not limited to: criminal records check, verification of academic credentials, licenses, certificates, credit history, professional references and/or verification of work history is required for employment.  Cal State East Bay will issue a conditional offer of employment to the selected candidate, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Unsatisfactory results may also affect the continued employment of current Cal State East Bay employees who were conditionally offered the position.
