Summary

Massey Cancer Center is seeking qualified applicants for the sr. grants specialist position. This position provides direct assistance to the Director of Finance in the areas of research programs, shared resources and University grants and contracts. Incumbent will represent Massey Cancer Center as a liaison to extramural funding agencies, other University departments, the Office of the VP for Health Sciences, principal investigators, partners, fiscal administrators, department chairs, and other internal and external customers. Position serves as a liaison between Massey Cancer Center and VCU personnel in the management of grants, facilities and coordination of resources. Incumbent is responsible for post-award monitoring and compliance of all of the assigned grants and contracts from sponsors that are to be managed by Massey Cancer Center, to include adherence to sponsor guidelines for grants management and financial analysis and reporting for post-award responsibilities.

Typical Education and Experience
  • Demonstrated research administration experience with emphasis on post-award.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of programs and processes of primary granting agencies, to include, but not limited to, NIH and other federal, state and private foundation regulations and requirements, as well as corporate and private sponsors.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of federal grants management guidelines and FAR practices.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of accounting practices and applied GAAP principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with detailed financial data and to analyze financial information.
  • Ability to develop projects that may include coordinating with multiple departments.
  • Exceptional analytical and organizational skills and the flexibility to handle multiple tasks and deadline pressures.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of the university research environment.
  • Skill in program development and implementation; including developing project budgets and providing guidance in project management.
  • Ability to effectively communicate.
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Working knowledge and understanding of office administration and grants management techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently to foresee and anticipate program issues and to respond appropriately in a timely manner.
  • Experience with database systems. Demonstrated superior skills using Excel, Word and other Microsoft Office software applications.
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing data, interpreting information, provide logical conclusions/projections and program evaluation and anticipating costs/obligations; previous experience using Banner, an enterprise financial software system, a plus.
  • Excellent customer service skills. Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize, focus, work independently and be flexible when contingencies arise.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, similar educational program, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 3-5 years grants management experience in an academic/medical setting, or equivalent required.
  • VCU financial security clearance is required.
Salary Range: $60,000-$75,000
