Taylor University welcomes nominations and applications for the position of Halbrook Distinguished Professor of American Government, a faculty position in the Department of History, Global & Political Studies (HGPS). This specially funded position is intended to advance the Taylor campus' engagement with free market principles and Constitutional liberty. This position supports the university’s mission to “develop servant leaders marked with a passion to minister Christ’s redemptive love and truth to a world in need” and the department’s mission to inspire and equip young women and men for domestic and global engagement through careers in politics, law, and public service. Ideal candidates will bring relevant professional experience working in government at the state or federal level and/or with non-governmental agencies or organizations focused on public policy research and advocacy as well as appropriate graduate degrees in disciplines associated with politics and public policy. Highly effective communication skills in public speaking and writing for print and online sources are essential, as well as a passion for engaging with students. Candidates will be expected to affirm and support by example the Taylor University Life Together Covenant and their belief in the Statement of Faith and other foundational documents.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The Halbrook Distinguished Professor of American Government will have the following qualifications:

  • At least five years of successful experience working in government (state or federal level) or with a non-governmental agency or other organization focused on public policy advocacy.

 

  • Evidence of thoughtful research in areas associated with the U.S. Constitution and the free market system and publications in both popular and professional journals (print and online).

 

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to explain foundational Constitutional principles to undergraduate students and faculty on campus and to the community beyond the campus through online, hybrid, or nontraditional course delivery.

 

  • Possession of relevant graduate/professional degrees (e.g., MA, JD, PhD).

 

  • Strong commitment to evangelical Protestant Christian faith and to the integration of faith and learning.

 

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Halbrook Distinguished Professor of American Government will:

  • Lead in the continued development of the Halbrook signature course focused on an appreciation and understanding of the American Constitution and free market system, and deliver and promote that course to an increasing audience across the Taylor campus and larger Taylor network. This is a two-course load spread over Fall, Spring, and Interterm semesters.

 

  • Engage students in discussions of important political and economic issues through curricular and co-curricular activities that enhance their Constitutional and economic literacy. 

 

  • Collaborate with History, Global & Political Studies Chair, Dean, and Provost in oversight of the Halbrook speaker series that seeks to bring nationally recognized speakers to campus to engage students in the most important conversations facing our nation.

 

  • Promote civic engagement grounded in a deeper understanding of foundational principles expressed in the U.S. Constitution. 

 

  • Lead in the development of courses, seminars, workshops, and publications that support the HGPS Department’s programs (Politics, Philosophy, & Economics; Politics & Public Service; Politics and Law).

 

  • Work to develop the Taylor policy and legal alumni network and look to connect this network with current Taylor students.
