Position Summary:

The Physics Department at the University of Dayton invites applications for two full-time lecturer positions. The positions are non-tenure track positions that are renewable annually and begin August 16, 2022.

The Department emphasizes strong undergraduate research and supports and/or advises a significant number of PhD and MS students from outside the Department. Students with most majors offered by the University take one or more introductory physics courses. In a typical semester the enrollment in introductory physics courses numbers more than one thousand. Successful candidates will teach introductory physics courses to science and non-science majors. The typical teaching load is 12 credit hours per semester during the 9-month academic year. Successful candidates who are renewed for six years or more are eligible to be considered for non tenure track promotion in accordance with the University’s recently implemented lecturer promotion policy.

Minimum Qualifications:

● Graduate degree in Physics or a closely related field at the time of application.
● Effective written communication skills.
● Potential for excellence in teaching physics to science and non-science students in a liberal arts environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

While not everyone may meet all preferred qualifications, the ideal candidate will bring many of the following:

● PhD in Physics or a closely related field.
● Successful experience in one or more of the following:
○ teaching in the North American system of higher education.
○ teaching introductory level physics courses beyond graduate assistance teaching duties.
○ working with and/or teaching socially and culturally diverse communities.
○ effectively using active and innovative learning resources/pedagogies, including technology, to engage students and enhance the learning of physics.
● Effective oral communication skills.
● Effective interpersonal skills.
● Commitment to breadth of education including educating the whole person in the Marianist tradition to support the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment of service to the community, university and profession.

Special Instructions to Applicants:

A complete application includes:
1. Cover letter that articulates how the applicant meets each of the specified minimum requirements and as many as possible of the preferred qualifications.
2. CV
3. Teaching statement that describes the applicant’s approach to teaching physics and provides evidence for the potential for excellence in teaching physics at the University of Dayton.
4. Transcripts from a graduate school in physics or a closely related field.
5. Names and email addresses of three references. Letters of recommendation will be requested from applicants that reach the interview stage. At least two of these recommendation letters must address teaching ability.

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Update Regarding Executive Order 14042 Effective Nov. 30, 2021:

A federal court on Nov. 30 issued a ruling that suspends the requirement that applies to federal contractors in Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee. With this development, the University will pause any enforcement action against employees who work in these states and who have not complied with the requirement to be fully vaccinated by Dec. 8 or to have requested an exemption to maintain their employment status.

The University will continue to monitor the state of the pandemic on campus and in the community as well as developments in federal and state requirements, and also will continue to regularly consult with public health officials and our medical panel. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, our protocols and requirements are subject to change depending on conditions on campus or in our community, and government requirements.

The following requirements remain in effect for all positions located in states other than Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee: To comply with federal rules, UD will require all employees, including student employees, for all positions performed outside Ohio, Kentucky, and Tennessee to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
