Position Summary

BCIT’s School of Construction and the Environment is currently seeking a regular full-time Instructor.

The Building Science Centre of Excellence in the School of Construction and the Environment, British Columbia Institute of Technology has introduced Western Canada’s first ever Graduate Program in Building Science with two degrees: a Master of Engineering in Building Science and a Master of Applied Science in Building Engineering/Building Science in September 2011.

The Graduate Program aims to establish a regional education and research capacity in Building Science and Building Engineering, advance the state of practice in building design and construction, promote sustainable design and innovation, and become a recognized knowledge-based node in the global network of building science experts.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Currently, the Building Science Graduate Program is looking for a talented team oriented individual to fill a challenging research and teaching position.  Candidates with research and teaching experience on offsite construction including modular, panelized and hybrid construction are encouraged to apply. The main roles and responsibilities of the faculty are as follows:

  • Develop and establish research foci and expertise on offsite construction and in line with the strategic direction of the program
  • Develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses
  • Supervise graduate students’ research projects
  • Develop collaborations with researchers within BCIT, and from other universities and research institutes
  • Develop partnership with industry stakeholders and solicit research funding from government agencies and industry stakeholders, and provide industry services
  • Conduct applied research consistent with the strategic directions of the Institute and the School
  • Assist the program Director in setting up research priorities
  • Assist the program Director in preparing operational budgets
  • Serve on committees for the School, the Institute, and industry associations
  • Actively engage in scholarly activities and produce publications

Qualifications:

  • PhD in Engineering or a related field and a minimum of three to five years current, related research and teaching experience
  • Experience in offsite construction design and construction
  • Experience in structural design and prefabrication of two- and three-dimensional building components
  • Knowledge of advanced fabrication (manufacturing) methods, software and assembling techniques.
  • Good knowledge of physical, mechanical and hygrothermal properties of building materials
  • Experience in timber engineering and mass timber construction is an asset
  • Demonstrated success in writing research proposals and securing research funding
  • Proven ability to produce quality publications in the field of specialization
  • Experience in post-secondary environment and teaching experience would be an asset
  • Good organizational skills and high degree of self-motivation
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, demonstrating an excellent command of the English language
  • Project management skills with demonstrated ability to manage budgets and adhere to timelines would be an asset
  • Recent industry experience would be a strong asset
  • Eligibility for registration as a professional engineer

Salary Range: $56,845 - $99,571

Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment. Salary based on education, experience and placement criteria as outlined in the Collective Agreement.
