Position Overview The position of Fellow in Law and Public
Policy/Director of the Lubar Center for Public Policy Research and
Civic Education reports to the Dean. The individual is the primary
external face of the Lubar Center, conducting public events and
working with other Lubar Center and Law School colleagues to
develop robust programming that will expand the Law School’s role
as a player in creating a public square for unique and important
public policy discussions to be convened or to occur.
Duties and Responsibilities 1. Act
as the primary external face of and spokesperson for the Law
School’s Lubar Center.
2. Plan, oversee, and moderate events and conferences.
3. Understand and identify current public policy issues/trends and then select/filter through those that are relevant to the Milwaukee region, Wisconsin, and the nation, to develop and execute programming ideas (create content) that address important community issues as well as engage the community. This could be individual programs or conferences.
4. Manage the Lubar Center as an idea incubator and as a convener of building an understanding of challenging public policy issues.
5. Set the agenda for the Lubar Center—work with others on the team to determine priorities, goals, direction, and ambitions of the Lubar Center.
a. Work with the Director of the Poll to develop survey topics and support for other programs b. Work with the Lubar Center Program Manager to collaboratively strategize, identify, and execute programs and conferences and maintain, identify, and develop relationships to promote activities of the Lubar Center
c. Work with the Law School’s Senior Fellow in Law and Public Policy to collaborate on program ideas of mutual interest, share duties in programs where more than one person’s involvement is beneficial, cooperate on follow-up coverage of public policy programs on the Law School website or elsewhere, and potentially to report and write stories for the Marquette Lawyer magazine, Law School blog, or external publications.
d. Work with the Lubar Center Research Fellow to develop and communicate empirical research and analysis of trends affecting Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
6. Monitor local, state, and federal policies to develop programming ideas for the entire public policy team.
7. Work with internal and external stakeholders to identify programming priorities and responsibilities.
8. Identify, and attract to programs, relevant decision-makers. 9. Research, analyze, and write on current public policy issues. This could be solo as well as in collaboration with other members of the Lubar Center/public policy team.
10. Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Bachelor’s or advanced degree in journalism, public policy, and/or governmental relations or related fields such as law or business.
5 to 10+ year of relevant experience in journalism, public policy, and/or governmental relations or related fields such as law or business.
Multi-media skills, comfortable with Zoom and Teams and other media platforms. The Lubar Center has a reputation of neutrality and independence—the person needs to be able to handle viewpoints and backgrounds in an evenhanded way. Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to take public policy issues and write and speak on them so the average person can understand. Widely respected, or capable of becoming so, as an honest broker among groups and individuals of differing viewpoints Sensitivity to the underserved. The person needs to be a quick study and have the ability to adapt to changing issues—quickly pivot to develop programs as the landscape changes. Flexible to respond to current events. Knowledge of who the “players” are locally and on the state level. Well versed in local, state, and national policy (or willingness to learn local and state issues). Work in a team environment. Collegiality. Well-read on current topics. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
